Star mare

Postby wallinga » Mon May 21, 2007 7:06 pm

Who would everyone say is the best broodmare in the world in the last twenty years. Obviously, Dahlia, Hasili, Toussaud and Eight Carat stand out for sheer numbers of G1 winners, but what about continuing influence?

20 years... that would put us back to 1987... instead of Hasili, I would say her dam Kerali has been one of the most influential across generations and still sitting into the time frame with her oldest foal being an 89, Dissemble, the dam of Leroidesanimaux.

Classy n Smart is one that's been huge.

Althea had an abbreviated stud career but her daughters have carried on her line of Courtly Dee with amazing results from limited numbers.

Blush With Pride started off as a poor producer but really turned it around when bred to speed. Her daughters, especially Better Than Honour need no introduction.

La Affirmed is one of my personal favorites. How amazing of a broodmare has she been? Add to that her daughters are producing top notch runners and exciting young stallions, and its amazing.

Coup de Folie has probably had the biggest impact of all on the list. The Natalma/Almahmoud clan is the best stallion producers and this might be their classiest branch.

Narrate has separated herself as a true stallion producing bluehen. Almost every decent runner from this family has been able to sire a top class horse or produce one in the shed. She is a true modern day Claiborne bluehen.

Seaside Attraction is another mare who died way too soon. Her immediate impact might not compare to the others on the list, but she will get there through the class of her amazing dam, Kamar.

Weekend Surprise deserves mention on this list. Great producer who's name keeps popping up over and over.

Flippers is one that most certainly can be argued but the family is really starting to heat up.

Alruccaba might be the best current conductor of the amazing Mumtaz Mahal line. I would die to have something tail-female to Alruccaba.

Maplejinsky was a terrific race filly who's daughters are carrying on with amazing class.

Flame of Tara and Fruition are half-sisters who get little respect States side but they are/were amazing producers and the family is continuing. Great and underrated sire power from them.

Nijinsky Star has been a great fountainhead of top runners for a few generations.

Ruby Slippers is border-line but I really think that family is going to be strongest through her.

A case could be made for Expressive Dancer.

T.C. Kitten is older than my choices but she's a major bluehen who gets very little recognition and respect. Check out what her daughters have produced.

Hopespringsforever has been a great broodmare for Overbrook and her daughters are producing well.

I listed only mares who's majority of their offspring if not all their offspring were born after 1987.

With that said, the following mares I consider bluehens that directly affect US and European pedigrees with the most influence... some of their daughters and granddaughters are on my list above, but many had offspring that were too old to qualify.

Courtly Dee
Best in Show
Busanda
Natalma
Mumtaz Mahal
Crimson Saint
Monarchy
Kamar
Numbered Account
Ballade
Lalun
Lassie Dear
Moccasin
Stick to Beauty
Thong
Change Water
Electric Flash
Happy Mood
Sookera
Miss Carmie
Golden Trail
No Class
Cequillo
Foggy Note
Blue Canoe
Shenanigans
Natashka
Iltis
Exclusive
T.C. Kitten
Mrs. Peterkin
Plum Cake
Hopespringseternal
Quill
Victory Chant
Far Beyond
Village Beauty
Innocence
Banquet Bell

Further more, I do not consider Toussaud or Dahlia bluehens. They were/are very good producers, two of the best ever, but Dahlia's daughters have never been able to reproduce much, which has left the line dead. Toussaud seems to be fitting that mold as well, but there's still a lot of time for her daughters to kick in.

Maven...did you purposely leave Glowing Tribute off this list? Remind me to squirt you in the face with a water pistol. Grrr!!!!!

And, how could you not add Personal Ensign?

No, my mistake. Good catch. She deserves to be on there. For forgiveness, im very close to closing on a filly who's 3rd dam is Glowing Tribute and who's 2nd is Wild Applause...

Those aren't all post 1987 are they?

I think if you are going back further, Battle Creek Girl deserves an honorable mention. More recently, how about Mariah's Storm?

While still too early for her daughters, Viviana should get an honorable mention.

Going way back, I like Bourtai, because of the extraordinary durability of her progeny.

What does Bali Babe have to do to make the list?

Maven...I see you didn't list Trolley Song. LOL!

Would Relaxing count, as she's certainley had foals within the last 20 years?
Dam of 3 Grade 1 winners (Cadillacing, Easy Goer & Easy Now).

Cadillacing produced a Grade 1 winner with her 1st foal, a Grade 2 winner and another graded placed runner before dying prematurely. Her less successful racing son Easing Along has since become leading 1st crop sire in Argentina.

Easy Goer from only 130 some foals managed to get 9 (I believe) stakes winners and a few Grade 1 winners amongst them. As of my last Blood Horse that listed cumulative broodmare sires he ranked #12 on the list with only 53 dams....the lowest number of dams for any stallion on the list of 70 plus stallions. Add in another Grade/Group 1 as a broodmare sire for his grandson Astronomer Royal's success a few weekends back.

Easy Now hasn't had the success of the other two, but maybe if they stop breeding her to AP Indy/Pulpit (aka Slew sons) she'll produce something decent yet. Has there been ANY affinity for the Slew line with Relaxing's tribe?? I don't think Easy Goer produced a thing from Slew mares, and what have his daughters produced from that line outside of Corinthian? Poor My Flag produced duds with AP Indy, so of course they bred her daughter 1st time out to him....

None of Bali Babe's daughters have made an impact. Although she, herself, was a grand producer.

Relaxing was a phenominal broodmare but that family seems to be on the rapid decline. There hasnt been a major producer from that family in quite some time and the granddaughters and such are still not producing runners even when bred to the top stallions of today.

Some great matrons seem to produce very good female families while others produce outstanding sires. Rarely does both occur.
