I don't know if anyone watched Belmont on Friday, but Spanky Fischbein broke his maiden pretty impressively (:21 4/5 opening quarter, :58 for 5/8ths) in a NY Bred baby race.
I doubt that Hook And Ladder will be standing for the same $6,000 stud fee in 2008, and I doubt he'll be staying in NY State for much longer. From his first crop (only 56 foals), his 30 yearlings averaged $48,000 and his 16 two year olds averaged $124,000 - those are HUGE numbers for a $6,000 stallion that was bred to mares with an cumulative AEI of 1.54...and nobody's complaining about the looks of his babies. Becky Thomas has a winner on her hands!

The colt that won on Friday was the NYBred FTSar sales topper last year. He was beautiful back then as well. I think he went for 220 or so. In my travels I have seen other H&Ls that were as good looking as this one...so H&L looks promising. We have one filly and one colt by H&L and the filly is both elegant and flashy with a good deal of leg under a sizable back end. We bred to him twice more this year.
NY is going to need a replacement for him...someone that is exciting in this price range - 4k to 10k.
