Indy Mood & the Indiana Program (SLOTS!)

Postby Roguelet » Wed Jun 27, 2007 7:27 am

I realize that time is running short for this season, but we would still like to get a few more late breedings for Indy Mood this year. We are offering COMPLIMENTARY breedings to Indy Mood to approved mares. If you have a mare you want to give one more chance to get in foal, consider Indy Mood. He is very fertile and has had great success settling mares that other stallions have missed.

Also, we plan to do everything we can to get as many good mares as possible to Indy Mood during the 2008 breeding season. Consider Indy Mood for your breed-back option, or for any mare you plan to breed next year. We are prepared to make SWEET deals on those as well.

Indy Mood finished last year as the #9 ranked stallion in the State and had the 4th highest winners/starters percentage of the top 10 stallions; higher than Crown Ambassador, Presidential Order, Composer, and Waki Warrior! He accomplished this with the co-fewest number of crops currently racing, and was one of only 4 stallions to be in the top 10 with 20 or fewer runners in the year.

Get in early on the slots... they're coming and purses are rising. There have been several meetings of the minds to determine how Breed Development will modify the current program to allow Indiana incentives to get better and better. This is definitely the time to get in on the Indiana bred/sired program, and we want to make sure that Indy Mood is WELL represented in the early stages of this process. For more information about Indy Mood, to submit a mare for approval, or to start planning for next year, just give me a shout.

Thanks!

Hi Rogue,

Isn't stallion promotion fun? lol! You should try doing it in California where most of the racing news is bad. I've spoken to hundreds of breeders this year and can't get over how many of them are just not breeding their mares at all. Count your blessings!

What are the current projected increases in purses and incentive awards in Indiana?

No kidding! Numbers of mares bred in Indiana have just plummeted over the past several years... to pathetic numbers. Many people moved their mares out of state, got rid of their mares altogether, or haven't bothered to breed them at all. Slots will be great for us, but the news came very late in the breeding season, so the big effect will start to be seen next year. I'm trying to get as much squeezed out of the tail end of this year for Indy Mood as I can. I believe in him wholeheartedly, but I also know that the "money" will be coming in next year, and those of us operating within a budget have to be creative to compete with those who have fistfuls of cash to throw around. As much as I would love to go out and buy 50 blacktype mares, I just can't... so I'm trying to get other people to bring them in. *Line forms at the end of my driveway!* I have enough faith in Indy Mood to plan on making my return via. stallion awards, not stud fees... even if I have to wait a few years.

I can't answer your question about incentives just yet, simply because nobody knows yet. There have been several meetings and a lot of ideas have been brought to the table, now everyone has to discuss, discuss, and discuss some more, then come to an actual agreement on things. The concensus of everything that I've heard to date, though, is that it's going to get a lot sweeter for the Indiana breds. Details of just how sweet, and what, exactly, the requirements will be remains to be seen. Unfortunately, I don't have much input there... we can all make suggestions, though, and give the decision makers a plateful to think about.

In 1986, about 10,000 foals were born in CA. In 2006, about 5,000 were born. Yet handle has about doubled. Yearling prices aren't much different from 20 years ago, either. For most CA breeders, it just doesn't pay to breed here, which only confirms my firm belief that most of us are just plain crazy.

Hey Roque - I know someone who has a Kris S. mare (not in foal) they are trying to sell in OH - at a really reasonable price. All her foals are runners and she just had a stakes placed placed winner - any interest? She also has a Dehere mare and a Seattle Slew mare (which of course would be a little too close for Indy Mood ;)

By "most of us," do you mean Thoroughbred breeders or Californians?

Both, but especially when they are combined.
