Sunday Break (JPN)

Any first hand observations of him and/or his foals? His first yearlings didn't sell all that well last year, which doesn't bode well for him. Still, an intriguing pedigree, and an underrated racehorse, at a reasonable price.

I liked hima lot racing. He had a lot of heart. Always seemed to run with tongue sticking out too...why do some horses do that??

The ones I saw didn't have much size and they seemed very narrow. There also seemed to be questionable fronts, especially on the left I believe. Again, I only saw maybe 6 or 7, but they seemed pretty uniformed. Having not seen Sunday Break, i'd imagine he must stamp them since they all had a lot of similar characteristics.

Oh, there are some good ones out there... we had one. I wasn't that sold on him, (actually, I didn't like him or his running style) but his pedigree, physical, possible versatility, female family, (and price), kept coming back to me as I was trying to plan a mating for a particular mare.

The result was a very pleasant surprise and I think you may hear about her soon... she is Zayat owned and in Mott's Saratoga stable... and, from her workouts and what I hear, is doing very well.

Maven, many of the one's with questionable front-ends probably got those from the dams. At his price and with many questions about his commercial viability, I am sure they took many questionable mares. I'm not saying he was "clean" but I don't remember anything about him I could not live with... nor did I think he had any real bad physical traits that he would pass along.

At the time, we boarded at the same farm as mares owned by the owner of Sunday Break... he provided some decent mares and many of the foals were pretty nice.

They don't tend to be overly big but many seem to be well put together. I would venture that they may need a touch more time. He is actually a pretty nice looking guy... except for the super high withers. Our mare tends to greatly influence her foals, and the result was much like her... except, perhaps, a little racier.

The ones I saw and became familiar with will all probably top out at around 16 to 16.1 and have fairly average builds. Some a little thicker than others, but I would not expect them to be weedy... however, like I said earlier... I am certain there were some pretty questionable mares sent to him.

Anyway, he would be one to keep an eye on. I think this is his first crop (I cannot remember whether I used him in first or second year). It is also possible that his second crop was stronger than the first (you can verify this by checking with the farm... Michael Herndon will know right off.

Thanks! Good information. I hope to make the Keeneland sale in September and will take a close look at him and his foals.

Interesting timing... one of the young critters I was referring to (bred by Narlinger) won a race in the U.K. today.

One correction from my earlier post... I forgot that Narlinger moved the horse across the street to Wal-Mac.

Could not resist but to post this... the Sunday Break we bred that I discussed earlier in this thread is Sunday Holiday. She ran a quality 2nd in the 2nd race at Saratoga on Saturday, (Mdspwt.), in her first race. Someone else thought she might be good... she went off as favorite.

She now holds the position of being his big winner in North America. If she stays sound, she might just prove to be a good one.
