HENNESSY DEAD
Coolmore Stud's prominent sire Hennessy (Storm
Cat--Island Kitty, by Hawaii) died yesterday in Argentina
at La Mission Stud, where he was standing the
2007 Southern Hemisphere
season. He was 14 years old.
He died of a heart attack,
said Coolmore spokesman
Richard Henry. It was one of
those freak things. He's been a
great servant to us and we're
sorry for the Argentinians. A
Grade I winner on the track,
Hennessy has been represented
by a number of top runners as a sire, including
champion Johannesburg, Henny Hughes, Madcap Escapade
and Silver Tree.
By leading sire Storm Cat, Hennessy hailed from a
deep family. His dam, the Grade I-placed Island Kitty,
was a half to GISW Field Cat and to Beware of the Cat,
the dam of Grade I winners Editor's Note and current
Coolmore stallion Hold That Tiger. Hennessy himself
was a half-sibling to GISW Pearl City and MGSW Shy
Tom. Trained by D. Wayne Lukas, he lived up to his
breeding as a two-year-old of 1995 while wearing the
colors of Bob and Beverly Lewis, who had purchased
Hennessy for $500,000 as a KEEJUL yearling. During a
campaign that saw him win or place in seven of nine
starts, Hennessy captured the GII Hollywood Juvenile
Championship S. and GI Hopeful S. at Saratoga. Off at
7-1 in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Belmont Park,
he ran a close second to Unbridled's Song after a thrilling
stretch duel (video). Subsequently second in the GIII
Hollywood Prevue S. and fourth in the GI Hollywood
Futurity S., Hennessy suffered a career-ending injury
and was retired to Coolmore's Ashford Stud in Kentucky.
As a sire, Hennessy was a versatile sort. His get
includes Johannesburg, named champion two-year-old
in Europe and the U.S. after a brilliant, undefeated
2001 season that saw him win Grade I races in four
countries, including the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile in the
U.S. Hennessy, a shuttle sire who stood in Australia
and Argentina, was also the sire of Grade I winners
Grand Armee (Aus), Harmony Lodge, Henny Hughes,
Madcap Escapade and Sunrise Bacchus (Jpn). His
graded winners in 2007 include the top turf horse Silver
Tree, winner of Sunday's GII Fourstardave H. at
Saratoga, as well as India, Mary Delaney and Liquor
Cabinet (Ire). Hennessy currently sits in 10th on the
Thoroughbred Times' leading sires list with progeny
earnings of $4,259,599 this term. To date, he has sired
three champions, 57 stakes winners, 36 graded winners
and earners of $53,721,994. A solid sales sire,
Hennessy saw a total of 374 yearlings average $148,257
over the course of his career. His sons at stud include
Johannesburg, who stood for a fee of $65,000 in
2007; Henny Hughes, who stood his first year at Darley
for $40,000; first-crop sires Cactus Ridge and Wiseman=
s Ferry; Roll Hennessy Roll; Blazonry; and Heckle.
