5th dam
Samanda (GB), unraced; dam of 9 winners. Her owner Lord Derby's ancestor, the 17th Earl, spared the life of a foal in 1956 which had an horrific accident. The little filly's dam Gradisca had for some reason spooked and panicked and crashed through a set of paddock rails. She was unhurt but her foal's optic nerves were crushed, rendering her blind.
Otherwise, though, the foal was unharmed and allowed to take her chance in life. She was named Samanda and, despite her disability, lived long and prospered as a broodmare. Although kind and gregarious, the handsome chestnut had to accept isolation as a burden of her sightlessness, as she could not have been pastured with other horses, against whom she could not defend herself. She lived in her own paddock with a loosebox opening into it and could find her way around perfectly. Her eyes looked normal, but she carried her head tilted with her ears pricked to catch every sound, and moved with her nose outstretched. Her foals, of which she produced 12 before her death at the age of 19, all wore a bell on their head collars.
6th dam REINE DE COURSE
Gradisca (FR) The female line came into the Derby Stud when the 18th Lord Derby (uncle of the current Earl) made an exchange with the well-known French breeder Madame Couturie, which gave the lady a half sister to Derby’s top runner Alycidon. Lord Derby received the mare Gradisca, who would become the fourth dam of Ouija Board. Also dam of TAHITI II, winner of 1954 Prix de Diane and Prix de Saint-James, and of Almah, who became grand-dam of one of Australia's outstanding champions, Kingston Town; and other branches of the dynasty have produced Argument (Washington International), Cistus (Prix de l'Opera and Nassau Stakes), Lancastrian (Prix Ganay) and Owington (July Cup).
7th dam
Phebe (FR) REINE DE COURSE
8th dam REINE DE COURSE
La Grelee (FR) Never raced due to badly twisted forelegs but said otherwise to be an attractive individual. According to author Peter Willett, she was slated to be put down by her breeder, William Chanler, due to her deformity, but Courterie had taken a liking to her and asked to be allowed to buy her. Chanler agreed to spare the filly and gave La Grelee to Courturie as a gift, refusing any payment. La Grelee produced ten winners and became the foundation mare of Courturie's Haras du Mesnil. This filly became the dam of French stakes winners Rialto, Roahouga, and Alcyon, and ancestress of French classic-winning filly Tahiti, Lancastrian, Teleprompter, Brazilian runner Noquinha, and Australian standout Kingston Town
9th dam
Grignouse (FR) . Ouija Board’s family is tail-female to the Isonomy-line mare Grignouse. At stud, Kilglas sired Grignouse, dam of La Grelee, by Helicon.
