Corinthian to Stand....

Corinthian to Stand at Gainesway
Corinthian, winner of this year's Metropolitan Handicap (gr. I), will enter stud in 2008 at the Beck family's Gainesway Farm near Lexington, Ky. He is being pointed toward the Oct. 26 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.

A 4-year-old son of Pulpit trained by Jimmy Jerkens, Corinthian captured the Met Mile over Political Force, with Lawyer Ron finishing third. Earlier in the year, he won the Gulfstream Park Handicap (gr. II) and was a 9 1/2-length winner over 2006 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) victor Jazil in an optional claiming race at Gulfstream.

"The Met Mile has produced some of the greatest stallions in history," said Gainesway president Antony Beck. "Corinthian is a superior individual, a very athletic, well-bred stallion prospect from one of the best stallion-producing female families, which has aready produced top sires Sadler's Wells and Nureyev."

Corinthian, who placed in last year's Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II), has won five of 11 races and earned $727,273 for Centennial Farms. Centennial president Donald Little Jr. bought the colt for $385,000 at the 2004 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling sale from Gracefield.

Bred in Kentucky by Gracefield Equine and Hargus Sexton, Corinthian is a half-brother to grade II winner Desert Hero.

Interesting...very interesting. your thoughts? anyone want to take a stab at the stud fee?

shoot, he did? Is that for a part of him or for all of him?

I would think he would command more than that. Look at his family for crying out loud that's a steal.

He has one G1 win to his name... 30k would be pushing it for a LOT of breeders who would otherwise support him.

Although his family is one of the best, if there's one weak stallion producing branch of it, it's this one.

Now, don't get me wrong. I will argue this is the second best stallion producing family in the studbook till i'm blue in the face, but to play Devil's Advocate here, the Number branch has produced Chequer, Jade Robbery, and Numerous by known sire of sires Mr. Prospector... and they were forgettable at best at stud.

I will absolutely send at least one mare to him and I believe he will be a very good stallion, but there's always a chance of him not panning out. So, let's not get carried away with his fee.

As someone who tabbed him as my "Derby horse" last year, I've always thought that he was a very talented individual with a superb pedigree. That being said, given his well-documented temperment issues, I'm not sure I'd want to take a chance at the prices mentioned in this thread. Of course, if you're breeding to sell, I suppose those issues are of less concern.

for 30k, I don't think you will find much more first year stallion value than this.

between a mile and mile and a 1/16th, you won't find too many in the world on dirt better. i don't think he likes going any father.

I'm going to say his fee is going to be $45k, and I don't think he is going to have too much of a problem getting mares either at that price

At least Corinthian be better managed at Gainesway than at a factory farm, so I think that if he stands for an introductory $15,000 - $20,000 and has early success, that fee might double very quickly. Look at the great job Gainesway did with Officer at $15,000.

Meanwhile, Claiborne standing Stroll for $5,000 as a son of Pulpit is just as bad as Overbrook standing Tactical Cat as a son of Storm Cat. This business has a sense of humor, doesn't it? LOL!
