He's terrible. Loved him when he was racing, but, just, no. I can't see any reason to breed to him.

I know that Fastappy is taking this loss to the California breeding program very hard. Maybe Behrens can pick up where Gentlemen left off.

I loved him as a racehorse. Forgot all about him till this thread, it's a shame he couldn't reproduce his talent.

Actually Roke, I've been saving my money so I can breed to Buddha at 10K. Seems to be a good bargain. If nothing else I'll have a great halter horse! :wink:

I don't know what went wrong with Gentlemen. His 15th dam, Mowerina, produced a Triple Crown winner in 1850. I'm stumped!

Buddha, huh? You're sharp as a tack, Fastappy...we need your clear thinking on these boards! But I thought you had your heart set on sending a mare to that CA sires of sires, Ventriloquist.

Ventriloquist? Man you go back a ways! He's 21 years old, ranked 284th on the sires list, with 4 starters 1 winner and just over $3,700 in earnings this year. If I get a discount, I'm all in! :roll:

I remember him from his Walmac days and one thing about Gentlemen that stood out is how difficult and nasty a horse he is to work with. I actually stopped a groom leading him in to his paddock for photos (because he's a good looking horse and if he had a gun, I think he would have shot me.

Unless he's mellowed, I guess it would be like having Dynaformer around except that he only breeds 4 mares. Seriously maybe that's why Applebite wanted him gone.

What irks me is they're still sending "known crap" to Louisiana and Louisiana still keeps taking them. It's either known dogs or unraced sons of Storm Cat!!

I believe Louisiana will eventually end up with all the unraced and non-producing Storm Cats there are!!! It been that way for years and years and I suppose it won't change in the near future. Louisiana gets and takes all the throwaways either no one wants or have tried and failed.

I truly believe LA has the brightest future of any state when it comes to breeding and racing but the truth is we don't need more doggy stallions , we need better mares!!!! In my own small way I'm trying to do my part. There have been changes for the good for both breeders and race owners, but with the amount of purse money and breeders award money being offered it is only a matter of time when the "big boys" move in . We welcome the "big boys" but please leave those "dogs" where they are.

Gentlemen was a tremendous race horse and an outstanding physical specimen, but a well documented failure at stud. What is really amazing that California still imports these proven failures, but in this case even California breeders knew enough to keep away from him.

I think what is so amazing about Gentlemen coming to California is that everyone knew he was a proven failure, from coast to coast. The California connections had to have looked at his statistics, so how could they possibly have entertained the idea to stand him for $5,000. When they finally realized they better drop him to $1,500 they still did not find enough people willing to breed to him.

What's even more amazing is that someone in Louisiana apparently bought or were given this horse to stand.

Larrygene - remember when everything in LA was named "Zarb?" LOL! But you folks were kind enough to take Rodeo off NY's hands...we thank you for that!

Fastappy - Look at the NY program. There are ZERO mares there and there's ONE $10,000 stallion (Freud). When any sire has any measure of success in NY, Kentucky snatches it up. The NY Bred program is terrific - I race in it, the purses are terrific, and it's well supported with lots of races on the NYRA circuit. NY even has an open breeding rule - foal ANYTHING in NY and breed the mare back to a NY stallion and the foal becomes a NY Bred - that's how a Distorted Humor like Funny Cide became a NY Bred. But as long as NY has no mares and nobody will bring a mare to NY, it's a joke what kinds of stallions are offered - how does this small list grab ya?

rok, I do rememeber when they were all named "Zarb" but at least they were runners,both dirt and turf. Now we have "Storm Cat ad nauseum" and they still get outrun by some Louisiana off-the-wall bloodline. It's all pretty funny but also kinda tragic. Sometimes it feels like one step forward and two steps back. But, times are a changing and hopefully for the good.
