Mambo Train

Postby fastappy » Mon Oct 22, 2007 10:42 am

Now, here's new stallion standing at Tommy Town Thoroughbreds (Santa Ynez, Ca.) that I'm glad will be standing California. He's bred very similar to Lemon Drop Kid with Kingmambo (Prospector) over Slew. I know that LDK started out slow, but most will agree he's a very nice stallion as his new 35K fee attests.

I have not seen this stallion but maybe someone on the forum can comment. Though his race record is not outstanding he is a G2 winner and a half to a very good Multiple G2 winning, G1 placed filly.

I was hoping for some more MR. P. line stallions for California. I know King Cugat is not setting the world on fire, but still this seems like a positive prospect for California. Any thoughts? Roke, I know how much you love Houston, but his mom is very nice!

Fastappy, I just don't understand you. California is loaded with Mr P lines with exciting stallions like Doc Gus, Cactus Creole, and Rumor Patrol. Don't you ever get enough?

Well we have Roar, Golden Gear, Perfect Mandate, Western Fame, Formal Gold, who are all pretty decent sires in their own right, but you pretty much know their limitations. I'm looking for a Prospector line that will be the "break out horse" that will impact California like In Excess has done.

I think Benchmark (RAN) is an excellent example in that he has thrown G1 winners sprinting & two turns. There a lot of holes in our current top sires from the Prospector line, which is reflected in the APEX ratings and distance limitations. I hope this stallion (Mambo Train) is well received and can pick up some of the slack, down the road.

Anyhow, what do you think of him on paper?

Let's see...he was 2-25, but he did win the Turf Paradise Derby. And with Houston on the bottom, the sky's the limit.

He might turn out to be the next sire of sires, but for the time being, I think foal names like "Rin Tin Tin" and "Mr Ed" would be appropriate. I've been wrong before, though.

Roke, remind me never to give you anything sharper than a butter knife when you're around me. You are correct though in my over exhuberance in this stallion's potential. On the other hand he is by a very good sire, out of a very good mare, he is twice G2 placed, and is a half to a very nice G1 placed filly, surely that counts for something. I didn't call you Shirley!

Fastappy....you've convinced me that he has a lot more going for him than does Behrens. May you get yourself a TC winner by Mambo Train! :D

Fastappy...

Kingmambo has several sons at stud in the US, only one of whom stands for more than $12,500. His highest-priced son stands for an advertised fee of $35,000...down from an initial fee of $100,000. Last year he stood for $25,000. Lemon Drop Kid is also the best runner of all the Kingmambos at stud in the US. And he is out of a 3/4 sister to AP Indy, a mare from arguably the best stallion-producing family in the US in the last 10 years. If anything, one might successfully argue that for both a racehorse and a racehorse sire, Kingmambo rode the coattails of an exceptionally good mare.

Mambo Train has none of those advantages. Houston was an utter flop at stud. Navajo got a few decent racehorses but you're not going to find most folks writing home about him either. MT's dam was an honest mare and has been a good producer, but doesn't even begin to compare to the genetic power bequeathed on LDK by his momma. I'd put him in with the rest of the Kingmambo sons to date..buyer, beware.

Well, I can't argue with you two, (Roke & Kimberley Mine) you make some cogent points, but I'm just hoping California comes up with some sire power. Like Miswaki's dam, Hope springs eternal
