Inbreeding to inbred stallions

I was looking at the stallion page of Quiet American and, among his stakes winners, I noticed there were a lot that were inbred (3x3 to Mr. Prospector, 4x3 to Raise a Native, 4x4 to Neartic, etc.). Since Quiet American is himself closely inbred (3x2 to Dr. Fager and 4x3 to Cequillo), I was reminded of a quote I had penned by John Ed Anthony (where I got it I don't remember):

"Horses that are in-bred themselves have great success with inbreeding."

Any thoughts/comments?

Nearco comes to mind.
He has St.Simon (4) times in his pedigree.

I wonder in a decade or sooner we will see (4) lines of,
Mr.P,AP Indy,Storm Cat etc.. an not make faces when we are looking at their pedigrees.

The 17th Earl of Derby had marked success with successive inbreedings that reinforced different parts of the pedigree. Take a look at the pedigrees of the full brothers Pharos and Fairway, for instance. Here, the Lord Derby purchased the mare Bromus (inbred 2x3 to Springfield) and bred her to Polymelus (4x5 Newminster and the result of a cross between Cyllene [4x4 Stockwell] and Maid Marian [4x4 Melbourne]), producing Phalaris (4x5 Lord Clifden). He also purchased the mare Anchora (whose dam Eryholme was inbred 3x4 to Newminster and 4x3 to the highly inbred Galopin, himself 3x3 to Voltaire) and bred her to Chaucer (4x5 Pocahontas), resulting in Scapa Flow (inbred 4x4 Hermit). Scapa Flow was then put to Phalaris to produce Fairway and Pharos, both inbred 4x3 to Galopin's son St. Simon. Both were highly influential sires, and in fact Lord Derby was one of the greatest breeders of notable sires ever seen.

Go to Australia - you'll see it five times in a pedigree. Ack!

Lord Derby also bred or acquired Selene, who was also sired by Chaucer, and put her to Phalaris several times, getting Sickle and Pharamond2, among other outstanding sires. Selene was 3x5 Galopin, 4x5 Hermit, and 5x5 Stockwell. Scapa Flow also had a 4x4 cross to Hermit.

When bred to Gainsborough, Selene produced Hyperion, who was 3x4 St Simon, and 4x5x5x6 Galopin. I read somewhere that Lord Derby liked the Canterbury Pilgrim line for his St. Simon/Galopin crosses.

Lord Derby really was one of the greatest breeders of all times. His record of sire production is unrivaled.

So whatever his breeding manager was thinking about breeding back to certain sires on both the top and bottom, it certainly worked.
