Storm Cat sons as studs?

Postby erhrdt3 » Sun Nov 18, 2007 11:26 am

Hi all, I'm a newbie here, and learning alot from you all, thanks.

I heard somewhere, read somewhere, that Storm Cat studs are, I believe the term was "a dime a dozen" (I thought he had a 500K fee!) and that breeding to SC sons is not a great idea....

Any thoughts on this?

My first foal, well, my mare's first foal is by a SC son. She is by Metfield who's by Seattle Slew.

Just wondering on your thoughts...and thank you

Storm Cat has certainly been a prolific sire of racehorses. However, his fee was lowered this year to $300K. Due to the large books of mares and the length of his career, he has dozens of sons at stud. Some, well, many are duds.

Without knowing the name of your mare and the stallion she was bred to, it is impossible to comment, since there is much more to a pedigree than the sireline.

I love to read Madelyn's posts - she's sharp as a tack!

Delineator has done pretty well here in the NW, those his babies are nutcases. That's why he doesn't get as many mares as it seems he should based on his race results. I heard he lost a testicle in surgery in May so don't know his current status.

True Confidence stood in Oregon and was one of those duds. He's in Brazil now.

I worked with Catrail in Ireland and he basically was shoved out of the country due to his nutcase offspring.

OH NO!!! I hope I don't get a nutcase!!! The studs name is Cat Ridge, he only raced for a short while, and I believe I was told he was kicked in the shoulder so they did not want to take a chance with him.

I had the opportunity to visit him last month, and he is gorgeous, with a very sweet disposition. Very spirited, running around his stud pen with the flagged tail held high, lots of muscles, great coat, ect. I loved him right away. He is also a newbie, so his fee was very low, and like I said in the other section, I have liver cancer, so I'm watching the large spendings now. Either way, the foal is already a part of the family, forever, whether he/she never gets to the track or not.

Someone told me I needed to add speed to my Metallica's foal, as she was a long distance runner. BUT, I'm proud to say, my girl beat colts!!
I know most of you are big time breeders, farm owner, etc. and I'm just one person, hoping to have some luck with the horses, but not at their expense.

I cannot believe what a large industry it is after my trip to see her last month in KY. WOW!

Thanks for the information! :)
