I always thought this guy would be a good sire and he's doing pretty well for a $5000.00 stud. He had his 12th winner today at Philly and has a couple of nice ones to watch for: Mad Flatter, who won at CD a few days ago, Champagne Eyes (finished a good 2nd as a maiden in the Sharp Cat stakes at Hollywood) and Indy's Alexandra, who is undefeated at Calder. He also has a stakes-placed filly named Bold Child, though she hasn't run in awhile.
I know a lot of people here think Congrats will be a decent sire; any thoughts, though, on Flatter ? Surprised at his success or not? Thanks!

I love the Flatter's female lines. Terrific old Mellon family. Though family has not produced real notable stallions, there is tons of quality there.
Soundness issues hindered Flatter throughout his short career. I feel this must be taken into account when choosing a stallion. I believe the proper durable mare could get you a nice horse. I'm contemplating breeding a decent mare to him strictly for racing though. Not much commercial value here.

I feel like the only one who vastly prefers his brother Congrats. Congrats is far better looking to me, although he may be a bit back at the knee. He was the more durable of the two and has a much stronger race record against better competition. Flatter probably showed more "brilliance." Of course, Congrats is standing in FL for more than twice the stud fee of Flatter and it isn't really smart or practical to send a mare to him if you're in KY. If it had been me, though, I'd have sent Flatter down there and kept Congrats at Claiborne. But maybe that's why they're Claiborne and I'm nobody!
Flatter comes from that strong female family and I'm sure Claiborne made sure he was well supported with some quality mares, so I'm not surprised that he's doing OK. He's not too commercial, though, and a fair number of the babies of his that I've seen wouldn't win a beauty contest. I can see Congrats doing well because the FL market should like him, esp. if he gets a pretty baby who looks good for the 2-year-old sales.
Congrats got a whopping 172 mares for his first year at stud, which I don't like. Flatter got over 100 mares each year during his first 2 years, then dropped into the lower 50s for his third year. He was back up in the 80s for this past breeding season, which would seem to be a positive sign and in keeping with what's normal at Claiborne. Was he having some problems during the 2006 breeding season or was that just the typical 3rd year slump?
