Smooth Jazz's son Smooth Air runs 2nd in the Florida Derby!!

Postby BargainBlueblood » Mon Nov 19, 2007 7:04 am

Grade 2 winner and freshman stallion Smooth Jazz, whose juvenile first-crop runner Smooth Air ran second in the $150,000 Jack Price Juvenile at Calder on October 10, is being relocated for the 2008 breeding season to Buckridge Farm in Kinderhook, NY. The speedster by Storm Boot out of Blushing Issue will stand for $3,000; he previously stood at Cloverleaf Farms II in Florida.

Trained by Todd Pletcher, Smooth Jazz won his career debut at Aqueduct and followed that easy Maiden Special Weight score with a decisive victory in the Best Turn Stakes. In all, he had five wins from 11 starts and bankrolled $321,105. Among his wins was his impressive performance in the seven furlong Commonwealth Breeders' Cup Stakes (G2) at Keeneland Race Course in which he earned a 117 Beyer Speed Figure and a "0" Ragozin Number, ranking him among the top of all North American sprinters of 2003.

From his first crop of 43 named two-year-olds of 2007, Smooth Jazz is represented by 15 runners and seven winners. He currently ranks second among New York-based 2007 Leading First Crop sires.

"Smooth Jazz is one of the most exciting young sire prospects, not to mention one of the best sire values, in New York," said Buckridge Farm owner Amy Boll. "He's exploded out of the gate this year with a $240,000 2-year-old in training purchase, plus a multiple stakes-placed runner in his first crop. Better still, his babies are bred to keep improving as they head into their 3-year-old seasons. Smooth Jazz had blazing speed and that speed is backed up by a sensational pedigree, top and bottom, that is loaded with juvenile form, including that of Blushing Groom, Key To The Mint, and Mr. Prospector. We fully expect 2008 will be a breakout year for Smooth Jazz."

Smooth Jazz will stand as property of a syndicate.

How does Sandy feel about this "other man" in the barn? :)

Smooth Air cruises in allowance

Smooth Air will likely be heading back to stakes competition following his convincing victory in Monday's co-feature. The 2-year-old son of Smooth Jazz drew off to an easy entry-level allowance victory going seven furlongs for trainer Bennie Stutts Jr. The performance came on the heels of his big second-place finish in the Jack Price Juvenile 16 days earlier.

Smooth Air, who has yet to finish worse than third in four starts, is a homebred owned by the Mount Joy Stables and was guided to victory by regular rider Manoel Cruz.

Just to set the record straight, Todd Pletcher didn't train Smooth Jazz early in his career, Tony Dutrow did. Tony picked him out of the sale, Tony had his people on the farm break him and Tony is the one who won stakes races with him early, I know I was in Tony's barn when Tony announced the horse was sold and going to Todd's barn. We all begged Tony to stop the deal, we told him Todd was going to ruin him because he was bought strictly as a rabbit. If you follow his career, you'll see what I am talking about.

Smooth Jazz's son, Smooth Air, wins the first major test for 3-year-olds in 2008, taking yesterday's $150,000 Hutcheson Stakes (G2) over a stellar field at Gulfstream Park. Shoot me an email or give me a call if you need seasons to this rising star in the NY sire ranks.

I was just going to post the fact that Pletcher used Smooth Jazz as a rabbit for the Coolmore's horses. It think it was the Florida Derby where Smooth Jazz was gunned to the lead and sacrificed to a Tabor horse who was a dud anyway.

I always felt bad for SJ, used like that, and I wondered if that affected a horse's psyche. Smooth Jazz was fast, and I'm glad he has an opportunity to shine at stud.

Smooth Air runs a good, closing 3rd (after getting into some traffic trouble ) in yesterday's Sam David Stakes at Tampa Bay. Onward and upward on the Derby trail!
