Afleet Alex - any thoughts?

Postby Rokeby Forever » Thu Nov 22, 2007 11:20 pm

I haven't heard much buzz about Afleet Alex. Have you?

As a covering sire, his median dropped this year from $150,000 in 2006 to $95,000 (Ouch!), but his weanlings this year had a $92,500 median, which is more than twice his stud fee. His colts sold much better than did his fillies.

Any impressions of him as a sire...even if they're gut feelings?

Gut Feelings

Postby hpkingjr » Fri Nov 23, 2007 5:35 am

The day after Thanksgiving is perfect for "gut feelings". I seem to have more of both today than yesterday. My gut is bigger than my feelings but here goes:

AFLEET ALEX WAS AN EXCEPTIONAL RACE HORSE. His foals are correct, racey and look the part. I believe he is another great racehorse that has retired to stud. My gut says he will not be a great sire. Hopefully I'm wrong, but my gut tells me he will be useful and standing for $15,000.00 in three years. If I'm wrong blame the turkey.

i would be all over afleet alex. afleet alex had tactial speed, could get any distance you could RATE, is by a mare who has produced 2 studs, and something I consider important and is always overlooked, does she pass on the abiltity to pass on traits? afleet Alex's half sister, a 4500 purchase, jolie hawk, has already produced a stakes winner in cash's girl AND her full brother, wynn in command is a pretty impressive 2YO.. not derby quality or anyting but I would be suprised if he's not a stakes horse in the future.

the only probolem I see is, this family is like a gold mine when crossed to northern afleet, and afleet alex IS by northern afleet so....

I would wait until his babies become 2YO's.. let te hype die down as much as it possibly can, becuase alot of people have the same feelings that he is not oging to be a good sire.l I think he is going to prove alot of people DEAD wrong

Um, BDW, dig a little deeper, it's not Northern Afleet they want. This family is a goldmine when crossed with Nureyev. Vale Mantovani was a multiple Italian stakes winner by Wolfhound, Qualique's full sister Honolulu Honey has a winner of $200k+ by Alwuhush and a winner by Theatrical, and of course Afleet Alex and Unforgettable Max carry Nureyev through Nureyette.

There's plenty to go with Nureyev...really opens up a lot of options for him.

What a sad commentary on breeding today, huh, HP? Afleet Alex could run, his foals look the part, and he's already frowned upon . Gee, let's go to an early breakdown type sire that throws straightlegged, high pasterned horses with long backs and bad hocks - how can ya go wrong?

Welcome to breeding in 2007. *sigh*

thanks kim. It's hard to dig when you are tailgating at the same time.

I love Northern Afleet. Why breed to one of the sons, when you can get to the dad for 10k? I hope I am laughing all the way to the bank in 2-3 years. I love NA. I have a beautiful filly by him and I hope she runs well for me. I plan on getting 2-3 mares to him this year.
best regards Brendan

That's how I feel about Officer/Bertrando.

I like Northern Afleet too, but there was no gutsier racehorse on the track than Afleet Alex and I'd be one of the ones hoping for great things from him. I certainly think he's better value than Smarty Jones.

BTW, did anyone notice that Scrappy T. worked out recently? I hadn't heard anything about him for ages. He's at BOW (I don't know where that is).

I love Afleet Alex as a racehorse and his pedigree as a sire. I think he'll be ok. I'm sure his babies will prove him to be one.

Isn't that Bowie (Maryland)?

Yes, that's Bowie, MD. It's a training center now, no more racing.
