Is Put It Back a better sire than Honour and Glory? In Summation and Smokey Stover sure are nice horses along with a few others.

It's not even close, Put it Back is wayyyyyyy better.

More debatable than you might think. Honour and Glory was badly overbred to a lot of mares that didn't suit him while at Ashford; granted, he probably should have gotten a few more good runners than he did, but he certainly had little chance to make a consistent sire while there; he was also wasted on his shuttle trips to Australia, where he definitely did not suit the local mare population. In Argentina, he has gotten much better support and has four G1 winners so far out of his first Argentine crop, and they haven't finished their 3yo seasons yet. Put It Back got some decent support from Haras Santa Maria de Araras for his first Brazilian crop with a number of mares who were either group winners or closely related to group winners in his book, and half his group winners so far are Brazilian-bred. I'm not knocking Put It Back's Brazilian-bred progeny at all as I think there's plenty of evidence that they breed some mighty good horses in Brazil; I'm just pointing out that the support and management received by a stallion make a big difference.

I like Put it Back better than Honour and Glory, just like I prefer Smoke Glacken to his daddy Two Punch. I am not sure why it happens but sometimes the son can be much better than the father. Anyone want to speculate why that happens? I am sure a logical place to start to look will be the female side of the pedigree but I don't see anything in either of these cases that says "ok now I see why that happened".

I'd venture a guess that Mom might have something to do with it. The goal of breeding (should be) to cross two good horses and come up with a better one because of the combination of genes. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't! Since nobody really knows what makes one horse better than another (besides of course obviously his genes) there's no way to look at a pedigree and say OH YEAH. Otherwise we'd have no well bred flops and no modesty bred successes. And no John Henrys at all.

He also has at least four Brazilian group winners out so far this year, including group I winners Skypilot and Rubia del Rio. Wouldn't be surprised if Skypilot follows in the hoofprints of Nitido last year as Brazilian champion juvenile male.
