Canterbury Pilgram

Postby bdw0617 » Mon Jan 21, 2008 1:57 am

When we talk about all of the great broodmares of all time, how come canterbury pilgram never gets mentioned?

the mare literarly gave birth to racing as we know it today.

her offspring are chancer who is the sire of scapla flow who were the sires of fairway and pharos who sired nearco and the rest was history

she is the 3rd dam to star kingdom who made austailan racing what it is today IMHO

she sired swnford who was no sluch as a sire himself

although she was based overseas, I think you can make a legit arguement that she has had the greatest influence on american racing today than any other broodmare in the last 150 years

My mare has a (linebreeding) coefficient of more than 1 %, influence 6 X 6 to Canterbury Pilgrim. So that’s a good thing?

CHAUCER 8s x 8s x 9s x 7s x 9s x 8d x 8d x 8d 8 2 (0) (2) 3.13% 6x6 4.64%*
SWYNFORD 8s x 9S x 9s x 9S x 9S x 8S x 8S x 9S x 8d x 9D x 9d 11 4 (2) (2) 2.93% 6x7 3.27%*
And she also has a bit of Harry of Hereford:
WAR ADMIRAL 7s x 7s x 5d 3 3 (0) (3) 4.69% 5x6 5.18%

And because you mention Pharos and Fairway in particular:
PHAROS 6S x 8S x 8s x 8S x 8S x 8S x 6D x 9d x 9D x 9D x 8D x 9D 12 5 (3) (2) 6.25% 5x5 8.67%*
And son of Fairway:
FAIR TRIAL 6S x 9D 2 2 (2) (0) 1.76% 7x7 5.14%* and that is thanks to this horse in her pedigree: http://www.pedigreequery.com/shortwood

She also has this horse in her pedigree: http://www.pedigreequery.com/cracksman

And my mare goes in tail female line via Sister Sarah to http://www.pedigreequery.com/sarita , dam of Sister Sarah. In my mare:
SISTER SARAH 6s x 6d x 7d 3 2 (0) (2) 3.91% 6x6 4.58%

Influence of Selene in my mare:
SELENE 7S x 9S x 9S x 9S x 6S x 8S x 7D x 7D x 9D x 9D 10 3 (3) (0) 5.27% 5x6 6.38%*

I don't think she's news to most people but not often mentioned because she's very distant in pedigrees now.

Plucky Liege, Selene, Myrtlewood, La Troienne, Mumtaz Mahal and Scapa Flow (as you mentioned) are all more recent mares that have had significant impact and they get more of the press.

this might be blaspmy, but as far as all time great mares I'm starting to thinik la T was a tad bit overrated. GREAT mare but when you start talking about the BEST MARES OF ALL TIME, EVER.. i dont' think she can compete.

Hi BDW,

Not blasphemy and it's always good to put tradition to the test.

La Troienne's not the influence through her sons like Plucky Liege, Selene, Scapa Flow, etc., but her mark on the breed is strong.

Most mares are known through their daughters, it's the few that make a mark with their sons. Gold Digger or Natalma are far less influencial without their sons (Mr. Prospector and Northern Dancer respectively).

As those sons get a successful sire line the mares name proliferates the breed. La Troienne did it the old fashioned way - through her girls.

A couple of personal favorites are Judy-Rae and Exclusive.

surely selene is the most special coz she foaled 3 champion sires whos tail male lines still go strong today

you would be hard pressed to find any other mare who has directly produced 3 champion stallions.

and lets not forget she also started a very decent female family as well

on that note maybe selenes influence came from canterbury pilgrims mother pilgramage.
