Postby bdw0617 » Sat Jan 26, 2008 8:09 pm

after watching the world record for a 6F non grass race go to down today, albeit to a fast track but nevertheless.. I decided to see who in the hell Bob Black Jack was and learn more about him.

I have honeslty.. never heard of stormy jack before. EVER. who is he.. is he a decent sire?

Good is a relative term. This is actually his first crop to race (with a newly turned crop of 2yos). He was a nice little CA-Bred sprinter for a few years and pretty solid from what I remember. Never quite good enough to step into open company often. They're running better than expected, that's for sure.

Looking at his son Bob Black Jack you shouldn't overlook the dam. BBJ is tail-female to a very active 14-c family. One of the most prolific producing speed families today. After seeing this I was not surprised by his speed and performance.

Too early to tell yet, but Stormy Jack may become a pretty useful regional speed sire. He was second on the Cal freshman sire list last year and is a son of Bertrando, who had no shortage of speed. Lot of Cal bloodlines there -- second dam by Pirate's Bounty, third by Gummo. He just moved to Harris Farms for this year, so he should start getting better promotion and support.

He's a top recommendation for my mare and I passed on a very reasonable auction share for in November. From what I hear from some very respected folks, he is stamping his babies and they are a nice bunch out of some pretty average mares.

I have recommended Stormy Jack to a couple of clients recently, and I am very high on him as a regional stallion, with the right mares of course. Judy Wardrope has also passed on favorable comments regarding his conformation.

Stormy Jack won up to a mile himself in Cal-bred stakes company. I'll leave it to Bill to discuss his Conduit Mare profile (his baby, after all!), but a lot of the Bertrandos are purebred front runners and don't get distances not because of any inherent lack of the ability to go 9F or so but because they don't rate well. Don't know if Stormy Jack was this type or not but I'd say a mile at least should be within the scope of his progeny provided they aren't out of pure sprinters,

Hi

Stormy Jack has a conduit profile of a sprinter/miler, with maybe 8.5 furlongs under the right conditions. The clients that I referred to him were looking mainly to breed sprinters (which are the majority of races written in the US) and weren't interested in seeking a runner that would go beyond 9 furlongs.

Stormy Jack was one of my all-time favorite Cal-Breds (up there with Tiznow, and same sire line too). What surprises me about Bob Black Jack is that, unlike his sire, he runs on the front end and dares the field to catch him. Stormy Jack, on the other hand, was more of a latter-day Silky Sullivan, a deep closer who came from waaaaaaaaaaaay off the pace (which was why I enjoyed him thoroughly).

Good to hear he's off to Harris Farms. I hope his book grows and improves, and the same goes for Decarchy too, who had 2 winners on Sunshine Millions day.

Bob Black Jack is sort of a lanky looking guy. He looks like a route horse to me. He must have a stride efficiency out of this world.
