breeding in Canada this year & who the heck do i breed t

Postby westover » Sun Jan 27, 2008 8:36 pm

We are breeding a mare here in Canada this year, i don't want to send her to the U.S. as she just came up from there.

What a canundrum, i laughed when i read Jane's post as i just keep looking through the Canadian Sire book.

We have a peaks & valleys whom i really like. Although his sale average isn't so hot.

We have a Tomahawk coming into the world in March. As my friend pointed out its his bubble year so i don't want to breed back to him. I love Peaks for many reasons but i am worried about the sale history.

I just don't know what to do. The mare is Kain's Deed (by Alydeed out of La Kain). You can look her up if you like on Pedigree Query. Thanks ahead for anyones thoughts. :)

There is always GONE FISHIN.
Look him up, then go to the website to see some really nice pics of him. Very impressive in person.

Your mare's family seems to have an affinity for Kris S. and Out of Place.

The new stallion at Gardiner is by Kris S., he apparently covered a large book of mares unadvertised last year, but don't know if that will 'dilute' the market.

I'm sure others will have more insight.

Peaks and Valleys average is low because his foals have been sold mostly in Kentucky where he was more of a breed to race sire. I would bet if you take any other Ontario sires progeny down there to sell, their averages would be somewhere around $1,500. Personally I think he's the best sire in Ontario, followed closely by Tejano Run who moves his mares up more than everyone aside from Domasca Dan and is in a virtual tie with Bold Executive. P&V and TR foals will be dominating the OSS races starting next year and will be 3 by the time your foal sells.

That Kris S horse at Gardiner looks like a cart horse in the ad's the farm has sent out. I know the horse got a big book of mares last year so perhaps he looks better than that in person, you'd have to hope so anyway. Combine his looks with the fact that he could only win going really long and I don't see that as being so good for the sales market.

I had bad luck with Peaks but I still like him and may give him another chance this year, he might however be a tough sell in the yearling market mostly because there will be so many in the catalog. I have seen quite a few Peaks offspring that were not all that correct, if the one you already have on the ground looks good then I'd have to say you might look really good at the sales.

Tejano Run might also be worth looking at, he has come up with some good ones. Maybe Ascot will give you a great deal.

Why don't you take a drive around one day and take a look.I know how you feel ,it is a lot of time effort and money, then find out you made the wrong choice. Not like breeding puppies    all over and done with in a few weeks,
good luck ,I am glad you are going to an Ontario stallion,no matter who you decide on.

'Let's assume that you were breeding to race only.

There is a stallion here that has 6 crops of racing age (not inc 2 year olds of last year), he has had 23 foals, 17 runners of which 14 were winners, total earnings over 2 million dollars (average of $4,900 per start). He sired Cdn Champion 3 year old filly Too Late Now ($566k), Soon To Be Single (288k), Orientalspringhope ($300k). You can get to him for $1,000 (or less).

This stallion, Raj Waki (by Miswaki) has never really been given a shot. His owner used him to breed his own mares and then used the horse to PONY at the track the rest of the year, some years he bred nothing at all. If you were just looking to produce a racehorse it would be tough to pass over this guy, who else has those kind of stats?

With the apparent affinity with Kris S. I would look at Kissin Kris, at 3,000C and his record it looks pretty good on paper.

DDT, it would be about a 2 or 3 day van ride to get from Ontario to get to Kissin Kris.

My brother handles all the stallion business, I stick with my mares and race horses. But, while we don't believe in slashing our fees in order to get a few more mares, we do look after our good clients. Call him if you decide to go that way and I'm sure he can work something out.

Since it was mainly a request for input, I gave mine, I am not here to hpye any stallion for this mare, but if she were mine I certainlly would look for a proven sire that has bloodlines that work well with the mare. I have no idea of the physical makeup here, and am only using pedigree as a basis for my thoughts. What would be better, use a sire that is close by that has little to offer other than shipping costs, or making a deal to save money?

Hey Rad :D

Maybe you should wait until some of your little "buddies" are born and see what you get. You might be so blown away by *ahem* Porkies foal that you'll want to breed to that stallion ;)

I was only stating that it would be a hell of a trip to go to that stallion, relax. I have a mare who sold a $550,000 yearling by Deputy Commander (unfortunately before I bought her) but I'm not going to ship her to California, when I can find something that will fit just as well 8 hours from my farm in Kentucky, or even stay in Ontario.

Kissin Kris is not "close by" Ontario. The mare in question is in Ontario. Kissin Kris is in ALBERTA. That's like shipping a mare from Michigan to Idaho.. something like 2500 miles each way, 5000 miles round trip. It would cost something in the neighborhood of a least $7500 for shipping    It is just not feasible. It reminds me of that poster from up in the northeast somewhere that provides enormous lists of stallions all over the continent when someone asks for mating advice.

The original poster in this case was looking for a stallion in Ontario.

The poster said she wanted to stay in Canada, nowhere does she mention staying close to Ontario, just Canada. If I wanted to get real crazy I could have said take her to Arch, only $25,000 and roundtrip to Kentucky.
