I'd guess they meant 16 hands 2 inches. That's a good sized horse.

Hi

According to "Ulbrich's Peerage", Buckpasser stood 16.3 hands.

I remember reading an article in The Bloodhorse years ago about Buckpasser. He was 16.3 and had "almost" flawless conformation, although he may have been slightly back at the knee. The article went on to say that his offspring showed the knee flaw more markedly than their sire.

That's from memory, but I'm almost sure that's correct.

Interesting, I'm dealing with a horse who is 17.2h and his photo really reminds me of Buckpasser in his racing days. The only complaint I've heard about him is that he looks slightly back at the knee. But to me its debatable, almost like he's just dead straight among horse who are normaly a bit over. He has 40+ starts w/clean legs, so I'm assuming that even if he's back a bit, he knows how to use his body well.

My experience too- back in the knee.

That's a big horse you're dealing with. Is he sound?

Yes, still racing sound and competitive. Owner wants to sell him instead of dropping him and before he starts developing "racing jewelery". Storm Cat grandson over Double Jay damsire line. Only one cross of Buckpasser in his pedigree... but he's leggy like Buckpasser was and that is the closest looking horse (conformationally) in his pedigree.

Built like that and with a close-up line to Double Jay? The jumper people might be interested in him.

He's actually sex balanced 3x5 to Double Jay. I have sent his photo to some H/J types to get their opinions.

My first mare was by Buckpasser out of a Double Jay mare. She was leggy as well and, although very old when I bought her, she still had the prettiest head I've ever seen on a horse. from all accounts (and pictures) Buckpasser was quite a looker as well. She was about 16.1. I have her daughter who is by Lear Fan and she is a good 16.2

I owned a 15 or 15.1 h.h. granddaughter of Buckpasser by the name of Lucky on Wings. Her foals tend to be about two inches taller then their sires are though.
