The Green Monkey

Just for kicks I checked out Hartley/Renzo website to see how they would spin The Green Monkey press to appeal to breeders. Nothing! Not one mention of the stallion except in the news section. He is still not listed on the stallion page....

Did they change their mind and decide not to attempt to stand the stallion?

Wonder what happened or will happen to the stallion?

I believe I heard, when word of the deal that they were going to stand him, that they were only going to breed him to a select group of in house mares; that they weren't going to make him available to the public. If this is the case then there is no point to advertise him. The only advertising he'll get is when his foals start racing as 2yo. I could be wrong about this.

Ah, that explains it. I must have missed the part about breeding him privately. Thanks!

By doing it this way, if the foals are butt ugly, or show that they can't run, the stallion quietly disappears with nobody making jokes about him. If the babies are showing talent then they can do all the talking for the connections.

When it was announced that TGM was standing in FL, they also announced that he would start covering mares in 2009. They probably haven't started advertising yet.

Or, maybe they are trying to figure out an advertising campaign for a horse who accomplished NOTHING.

They have a 2 page spread in an Ocala pub.

I can't imagine any outside breeders wanting to go to this horse.

someone remind me why he was such an expensive sale horse? His pedigree is ok, but nothing that screams million dollar to me. what am i missing?

He worked a fast eighth. That's pretty much it.

Some have suggested Coolmore already owned the horse when he went into the ring and therefore was bidding with 50% dollars once it got past a certain point.

That seems like a good theory. Those Coolmore people have had a zillion percent more success in racing than I have had, so normally I would give them credit for whatever decisions they make at auction, but $16million for that horse was absurd, and everybody knew they could not possibly come out. But they did gin up maximum press for him, and if he could run a little, it might have worked out for them. Unfortunately, he couldn't run across a wide street. If there was some behind-the scene understanding there, it would be the only thing that made sense about that decision.

It's a pity really. He'd have been cute as a button in the show ring.

If he doesn't pan out, I can imagine Randy will geld him & make him a barrel horse!

I visited Hartley/De Renzo on Friday and looked at The Green Monkey, Roar of the Tiger, City Place and With Distinction. The Green Monkey looked ok but With Distinction is by far the best looking stallion at HD. I bred one of my mares this year to Roar of the Tiger and he is having some early success with his freshman class. City Place is also doing well. I think The Green Monkey will get a large book of mares as they said he will stand for $5000 in 2009-although my money would definitely go towards one of the other three previously mentioned before I would go to the Monkey. He takes a pretty good picture, though, as he is quite the poser!
