Gallant Fox

Here is a pretty novice question but this is as good a place as any to ask... You would think that Gallant Fox and/or Omaha being TC winners would be... half way decent sires at the very least if for not any other reason, promotion and the amount of opprotunties they would get.

From what I undertstand, and I may very well be wrong, Gallant Fox had only one offspring of any signifcance, being Omaha (albeit a pretty big one) but other than that.. neither one of them from what I can tell did anything at stud.

Am I wrong? And if not, how is that possible?

Gallant Fox was actually a decent sire but far from top-class. Aside from Omaha, he got the Ascot Gold Cup winner Flares (a full brother to Omaha) and 1936 Belmont Stakes winner and Horse of the Year Granville, both members of his second crop. After those first two crops, his production tailed off considerably. Overall, the "Fox of Belair" got 18 stakes winners from 322 foals. His primary problem as a sire appears to have been throwing primarily one-paced, late-developing stayers. Omaha won his TC against a weaker crop than did his sire and was still worse about throwing progeny that lacked any hint of tactical speed -- not too surprising, considering he never won a stakes over a distance of a mile or less. His only progeny of any real importance were Miss Zibby, dam of the speedy Summer Tan, and Flaming Top, third dam of Nijinsky II and fourth dam of The Minstrel.

Granville also proved to be a bad sire and ended up standing for the U.S. Army Remount Service if I remember correctly. It was actually Flares who managed to keep the male line of *Sir Gallahad III alive for a while. He sired Chop Chop, who sired Canadian champions Victoria Park and Canadiana for E. P. Taylor. Victoria Park, in turn, sired Canadian champion Kennedy Road. The line petered out with the stud failure of Kennedy Road's best son, grade I winner Variety Road.

Gallant Fox had 7 full brothers and sisters, many of them of the highest quality. Marguery is the matriach of the Russ Marie clan, one of my favs.
