I love El Prado as a sire and should I keep my El Prado mare because my opportunities to have those bloodlines that close up does not come up every day. I have her for sale for $2500 and people want me to sell her for $1500 and as low as a $1000. Trying to sell has been frustrating because I wonder if I am asking too little for her. Will I have an opportunity to buy another El Prado mare being here in Maine without paying extreme shipping costs? El Prado was not bred to the best mares early in his career so his later foals should have much more promise as broomares being out of great broodmares. She has been sold and is on her way to Lexington.

IMHO, which isn't worth much, if you feel she is worth more than 2500, and people are asking you to sell her for less, than they do not understand how vauable she is and she is not worth selling. You see the value in her.

Run her thru the Keeneland November sale and see what you get for her

I like El Prado mares, too. It's hard to find a good one for a bargain price. If you don't NEED to sell her, get the price you feel good about or you will likely second guess yourself for a while. If you really want to move her, take the best offer on the table and run. I would guess it is not terribly easy to sell a mare in ME and I'm sure that is impacting your offers.

The catalog for Keeneland November closed on August 1st. This is a ten year old mare who has not been bred to any stallion of note. She is not in foal. She apparently only had the one foal, a 2005 by Tri Line. She has no blacktype of any note anywhere near her. My advice, Keith, is take the $1500 and run. What's the point of owning an El Prado mare if you don't intend to do anything with her? The older she gets with no foals - her value decreases dramatically.

I'm not trying to be super negative but I think from a practical standpoint your way overthinking the fact that your mare is by El Prado when that really does not mean very much when you look at her race record what she & one of her halfs sold for & she does not appear to have the strongest page. If you like her thats great keep her but if you dont then I would move her esp if your just talking about a difference of 1k bucks & too being in Maine would be hard for most as high as shipping cost are & they would probley have to buy her unseen. I would not get too hung up on keeping her if your worried about finding another mare as there are always mares out there that will fit into what you want to do. Go to the Nov & Jan sales as the extra expence is worth it rather than just trying to find something in your area or on the internet. I figure too the stallion population in your area is pretty limited and weak so unless you buy a mare bred to a good horse or dont mind shipping your fighting an uphill battle anyway.

Madelyn's advice is dead on.

There's little effective difference in value between a $3,000 mare or a $1,000 mare, they're hard to sell and if you can't get the better price then you're stuck with the lesser price if that's all that you're offered.

I'm not minimizing the difference in price that you haven't been offered but you should consider her costs to keep if you don't sell her.

There's an old saying, better to cry about the horse that you sold than the one that you didn't.

If this is the right mare you are more than lucky to get the $1,500
She is a maiden after 25 attempts at winning..
I would sell before you lose the chance...

Apparently someone decided to use Lady Wrong Song in a couple of 'poor man's PQ hypomatings' with Delineator and Storm Surge and left them under her offspring. It's back to normal. Whoever did that, knock it off. It's particularly annoying given that Delineator, oh yeah, is in the state of Washington. I did notice one thing, both are sons of Storm Cat.

About the mare, I thought about it this way, if someone tried to sell her to you for $2500 and you said to us "should I buy this mare?" I think you'd get a lot of people telling you no. Probably even at $1500. If you can sell her for more than folks would tell you to pay to get her, that's probably a sign. Is she physically lovely or something? I'm trying to make sure we haven't left a stone unturned here but there are other El Prados in the sea. That point about the value of having her versus the cost of keeping her was a good one.

PS. Great so while I'm in there trying to sniff around the Storm Cat/El Prado path someone went on, I see someone's been having fun with La Affirmed's progeny. Did somebody eat too much sugar today?

Hey how much did you sell her for? Are you looking for another El Prado mare or is there anything else you're planning on trying to find? I'm sure you'll get one you like.

She's up for sale again for $1200. It really is a light distaff catalog-wise. How did the dam ever get approved for El Prado's book?

I keep seeing this mare for sale and really want to like her, but I agree that it seems odd that her dam was even bred to El Prado. I keep thinking that if I owned her the only positive thing that I could use to advertise her foals is "she is by El Prado".
