What stakes victories are important on a stallion's resume?

Postby Toccet02 » Thu Sep 25, 2008 1:30 pm

What I really want to know is if there is a particular race that seems to bless its winners with great sire potential.
I have noticed most KY Derby winners DON'T Make great sires.

The Met Mile...the sire's race!

Ok so I am bored (overtired and really should goto bed - damn facebook) and decided to check...

Using http://www.bloodhorse.com/NOW/Breeding/SireLists/ it appears of the top ten the results are

Philip Islen, Salvatore Mile (Smart Strike, Distorted Humor)
Breeders Cup Classic (Tiznow and AP Indy - winners, Giant's Causeway runner up)

Only one - Langfuhr had run the Met Handicap.

Now this is nowhere near scientific and like I said I need to goto bed...

Hi Toccet,

A year or so ago I saw a comparison of Belmont and Met Mile winners in the shed and Belmont winners were, overall, the more successful sires (statistically).

I use the American Racing Manual history of graded stakes races, it can be enlightening.

Regards,

Pete

Salvator Mile winners isn't too shabby with Distorted Humor, Smart Strike and Slew City Slew. Every one mentions the Metropolitan H. but how about the Suburban H. winners which include a few decent stallions. Young America Stakes winners include Deputy Minister and Storm Cat.
The Kentucky Derby, Breeder's Cup Classic, and Preakness Stakes are obvious

Thanks for replies. I'm kicking around the idea of breeding stakes race winning stallions to mares that have winners of these same races in their distant past.
So far no really interesting hypo matings...it's amazing how talent can die out after 4 generations.
