Minimum Bids For Auction Seasons

Postby Patuxet » Fri Dec 05, 2008 9:21 am

I didn't want to clog up the auction seasons thread so I'm posting this separately.

I've noticed that different auctions post different minimum bids for seasons to the same stallion. I thought the minimum bid was established by the owner/manager of the stallion. So why the differences, some of which are substantial?

Some of the auctions themeselves have different reserves. Other differences may be based on incentives for that auction. Iowa, Georgia and Indiana, for instance, have pretty strong rewards for stallion owners in the form of restriced stakes races for offspring of sires with seasons sold through their auctions. For those situations the farms may be winning to let the season go for less with the possibility of upside later on.

Some auctions set a minimum. If it is not enough, the stallion owner/farm can set a Higher one.

Some auctions, as CS mentioned, offer future black type races for offspring of stallions whose seasons are sold through the auction. In that case, it is more important that the season just "sell" and less important what it sells for.

Regardless, donated seasons return no revenue to the stallion owner or stud farm. In setting reserves, stud farms can use auctions as advertising for what a NG season to that horse might cost. For example, if they set a minimum of $1750 NG, you could approach the farm and possibly get a NG season for $1750.. sometimes.
