Yeah, I like him too as a stallion prospect (not enough to breed to him as I don't breed to unproven stallions) but the triple Northern Dancer is a big negative...

Let's not forget that he is also tail-female to La Troienne - always good in my book.

I well know the problem with too much Mr. P but did not know there was a problem with ND line breeding.. Too much of anything is, well, too much but I did not think there was too much ND in either of these two stallions

But I an willing to be educated

The linebreeding to Northern Dancer clearly didn't prevent him from being a good racehorse, any more than it did this horse: http://www.pedigreequery.com/big+brown who, by the way, has a stronger concentration of ND in his pedigree than Cherokee's Boy does.

Hi, all!

Yes, I always avoid triple Northern Dancer and any Mr. prospector but that it just my personal preference. I got stuck buying a filly in a 2-1 that is triple ND and it's a battle to find a mate for down the line.

I think breeders are breeding themselves into a corner by not maintaining outcross blood.

In regard to Cherokee's Boy, he is triple Northern Dancer and about 75% of broodmares have Northern Dancer as well. So, what are the chances his foals will have 4 or 5 crosses to Northern Dancer? I would guess very high. I am betting he will not be breeding a book of complete Northern Dancer outcross mares. Especially, since his Regional market is and was filled with heavy Northern Dancer blood.
That is too much in my estimation.

I was thinking about this the other day. We have lost so many outcross race stallions. I am trying to book for my 2 mares. I did settle on Raffie's Majesty for one. However, there are not tons of outcross stallions left that have 5% stakes winners, 70%+ Runners; 50%+ winners, and an AEI higher than their CI. Oh, I mean left and in our price range (aka Rahy and Dynaformer).

I wish that Runaway Groom, Cozzene (who I did breed to last year and got a colt), Broad Brush, Lear Fan, Lord Avie, Bates Motel, Private Terms, Wild again, Skywalker, etc were still at stud. The sad thing is that none left really good replacement sons.....

p.s- Yes, I would consider Limit Out proven and a very good value if you have the right mare.

If you are looking for a non-ND and non Mr. P stallion consider Go For Gin who is a KY Derby winner and placed in the Preakness , the belmont & the Wood memorial. He's also a sire of sires in that Albert The Great sired Nobiz Like Shobiz and the recent winner of the Breeder's Cup mile on dirt.

eNicks says he does very well when crossed onto Forty Niner mares and Albert The Grat is out of a Fappiano mare.

I'm taking a mar4e to him next year that is a FortyNiner grand daughter out of a Cryptoclearance daughter.

fee is $4k and the foal will be eligible for the Maryland Millions plus I have the foal drop in WV and bred its dam to a WV stallion.
