Pedigree Query

I know Roman Ruler was mentioned briefly in the new sires thread, but I wanted to ask for more opinions. I'd like to hear what people think about him, about his offspring you might have seen at the sales, and about his chances of making it as a sire. Between his pedigree (half to El Corredor) and his race record (G1 winning millionaire) I think he has a better than average chance of success. We have a coming 2YO filly by him that we hope to race in 2009.

I was a little surprised by his sales results. I expected him to be more of a commercial hit--so I'm wondering what other people saw that I didn't. I'd love to hear your impressions.

Over all I thought they looked athletic and typey. There was not a reoccuring glaring fault. Maybe a touch on the small side but that's not a big issue for me.

I think Fupeg is what's been hurting them commercially.

I wouldn't be shocked if they're runners though. I found quite a few had great movement/walks.

Thanks ASB! I wondered about the FuPeg connection myself--and all the related concerns that go along with it. Overall I thought the physicals were a pretty strong group. Our filly is on the small side herslf (but so is her dam). But she's athletic and has a great brain. I can't wait to see what she can do next summer.

Roman Ruler's 2YO daughter, Vivid Colors, just had a very impressive debut maiden win in the slop at Churchill Downs. She led from gate to wire and won by 6 lengths or so.

That is just exactly what I think - fooey FuPeg. So many folks got so stung by FuPeg there might be a smell hanging over any of those.

I'm sure these 2YO's owners think their horses smell just fine.

Roman Counsel won a Maiden Special Weight at HOL after finishing 2nd in each of his first two starts.

Well, while I'm at it...also by Roman Ruler, Rickyontherun won a Maiden Claiming race at Delaware Park, giving RR 3 winners today.

I'm sure they do. My reference was to the sales appeal of FuPeg, even as a grand sire. It's a bit like the black cloud that followed that cartoon character everywhere. I think it will still be a very hard feeling to dispel and the sales appeal will continue to be grudgingly okay.

just asking... he's a half to a pretty decent sire. his younger half brother by vindication will more than likely, be a sire somewhere.. albeit probably regional or something like that.

I'm assuming you mean two half-brothers standing at stud? Only if they're unsuccessful.

If one of them proves to be a legitimate stallion, it will raise his profile and fee.

El Corredor is solid enough not to hurt any of his siblings, and good enough to have breeders give them a second look.

I do find it interesting that Silvery Swan has never been bred to one of the big, proven stallions. Mr. Greeley is a good sort, but I wouldn't put him in the top echelon of stallions and certainly don't look at his sons as immediate top stallion prospects.

With her pedigree and produce history thus far, I'm shocked she never saw Storm Cat or Indy (yet). She does have a Bernardini in the wings.

He had another MSW winner today at Calder. Homeboykris came from off the pace to win the 3rd by about 3 lengths.
