what do you guys think about a sire like surf cat?

he flashed enough talent that would warrant breeding to him, 6 grade 2's and only bad luck kept him from winning a grade 1. He could run on turf, dirt or the fake, short or long (all within a certain level of success but he was versitle)

His sire was not great, or even really good, but he has a very very strong female family, at least I think so.

is this a sire you would consider?

Not quite sure why you are so taken with his female family. His race record is good, but it looks like he is going to be standing in CA, and for $5000 there are better options. His female family doesn't come close to Decarchy's or Minister's Wild Cat. I liked Surf Cat as a runner, followed him and bet on him, but for me he will have to prove himself as a stallion before I would send a mare to him.

I didn't say his was a bad family, just that there are others with good female families in CA that are "good" a little closer up. Good Journey is another with a "good" female family. All of those I mentioned at least have foals to look at.
Like I said, I liked Surf Cat on the track and hope he is successful in the shed.

I am not thinking of breeding to surf cat or anything, I just think he's interesting and not your normal run of the mill sire that's kinda hard to pen down to what he "should" do or be.

In terms of female family, I think the best stallion standing in CA has to be Decarchy, hands down. And he was no slouch on the track either. It may be too early to tell if it will translate to success in the shed, though.

I'm interested in Surf Cat but not at $5000--at least not in this market when Benchmark is $4000.

Of course it depends on the mare but in Cal I would go with Benchmark, Bertrando or Tribal Rule way before I would look at any of the young stallions listed above. Benchmark is one of the best values there is @ 4k.
