what exactly do they mean by "an impaction"? in the bowel?

An impaction is a blockage in the bowel as opposed to a twist. Basically whatever the impaction consists of (it can be any number of things) is not allowing anything to move through and results in a lot of pain as well as a "backup" of feed/hay/water in the stomach (depending on where the impaction is located).
