Stroll back from banishment

Postby oliverstoned » Fri May 29, 2009 11:37 am

Of course I wouldn't mind being banished to the Italian countryside. I see Claiborne advertising him for 2010. If your going to send them to the hinterlands BEFORE they even have runners it is wise to have provisions to get them back, just in case. Good for him/Claiborne hopefully they can keep it rolling and not fall back out of favor like Our Emblem or Leo Castelli did. Anyone care to hazzard a quess at what his fee may be?

Claiborne has a pattern of reasonable pricing for their lower end stallions. I would guess that they bring him back at 7500.

They're going to need to keep it low. He's not a commercially viable horse, but seems, so far, to be tailor-made for the breed to race crowd.

He's not an impressive specimen, and his foals aren't either, for the most part, but they can run, as could he.

ASB... I think you're dead on: Poor physical specimen with progeny that are just as bad. But no doubt, they're putting a big hole in the 'beauty contest' mentality.

Anyone else think of a solid sire, or promising young sire with less than eye-pleasing foals? Dynaformer comes to mind...

Well, I don't know whether you could call him a "solid sire," but Real Quiet was crooked as they come (before his surgeries) and he sires really crooked foals, but a lot of them can run.

Well sure, I can think of several. The early Street Crys didn't look like much, and we all know how that turned out. The first crop More Than Readys were described as small and crooked.

There are also sires known for producing a particular trait--Rahy's offspring tend to be small; a lot of the Distorted Humors are short-legged--that buyers have learned to overlook because the horses run so well despite having what might otherwise be perceived as a flaw.
On the other hand, early buyers fell in love with the Buddhas. They thought they looked strong and racy. And they did look good...standing still.

Speaking of Buddah I see he has 96 2yos! I pity the fool who pays to train them.

The thing about Buddha though is that his foals were very good looking. A lot of people succumbed for quite some time. When they look that good, it takes a while to catch on.

What is it about the Buddhas that make them so undesirable?

Bohemia: They're incapable of finding the winner's circle, even with a GPS attached to the jockey's back.

LOL, that is funny! I guess what's kinda sad is that he's among the top 5 Pa. stallions in purse earnings, that doesn't say a lot for the state's stallion colony.

He has the Kentucky crop numbers on his side right now. He has 120 2yos this year (!!!)--so even if only 40 of them win (30%), that's still more foals than most PA stallions have in a year. Next year, when he's in the PA-bred, things will shake out.

Just to compare, Albert the Great stands at the same farm for the same fee. He has 30 2yos of 2009. He also has fewer runners, vastly more winners, and his median earnings is a thousand dollars more than Buddha's runners' average earnings. ATG's average foal earns over ten thousand dollars more than Buddha's average foal.

I did not think SKY MESA was that great of a specimen and his foals are doing awesome....same with Donaraille Court.
