Sad news. I was at Saratoga the day Red Ransom won his initial race, setting a record for five furlongs, and I was convinced Mac Miller had a potential superhorse, the incipient winner of the next Triple Crown.

This horse appeared to have it all. Physically impressive and obviously speedy, his sire, Roberto, won the 12-furlong English Derby, sported one of the more interesting American pedigrees I'd yet encountered and his damsire, Damascus, had been an especial classic favorite of mine. Even his name -- apparently derived from O'Henry's amusing "The Ransom Of Little Red Chief" -- seemed to have a ring to it.

Alas tomorrow's greats, as Robbie Burns put it, gang aft agley. Given Red Ransom's subsequent breeding career, perhaps he mightn't have lived up to my expectations. Anyone know if his Saratoga record still stands?
