Sweetsouthernsaint to Panama

Postby Fireslam » Thu Dec 10, 2009 5:42 am

I was at Ocala Stud yesterday, and they told me Sweetsouthernsaint was shipping to Panama in a few days. Thats a shame, he was such a solid breed-to-race type.

TRI JET and PIA STAR what a talented pair of influences he is carrying! Both are two of the most able influences usually bypassed by a considerable number of breeders. Excellent pair.

Damn! I lost a Sweetsouthernsaint filly during foaling in April and was planning to return the mare to him.

Sweetsouthernsaint is also bred 5x5x5x6 to Mahmoud, all thru different stirps.

My Florida breed-to-race options are dwindling. Wagon Limit, which has sired a Grade1 winner and has the third highest APEX of all Florida stallions, seems to have developed a fertility problem. Two years ago he had a 73% foals from mares strike rate. Last year it slipped to 54% and this year dropped to 37%.

Concerto is similar affected. Two years ago he got 60%, last year 58% and this year only 37%. Did the folks at Ocala allude to that, Fireslam?

I hear ya what are we gonna do down here. I keep waiting for a press release about a nice stallion coming to Florida, but nothing.

I started breeding in Florida but it's just not cost effective from a breed to race standpoint. A few other regional programs/purses are so much better in a multitude of ways.

I do think there's a few nice breed to race sires left in Florida though, namely Concorde's Tune, Marquetry, Halo's Image, Montbrook, Put It Back, and West Acre.

Is Skip Trial still active?

I hate to see Sweetsouthernsaint going to Panama. I actually DO look for Tri Jet & Pia Star in horses.

For a while, my cell phone's ringtone was "When the Saints Go Marching In" because I liked his dam's family so much (and was negotiating on a stallion from the same family - a negotiation that ultimately failed miserably).

I was sorry to see Marquetry going to FL - selfishly because it's farther from me -- but I DO think he adds to the FL breed-to-race options very nicely.

There are a few good breed to race horses left; I just think SSS at $2500 was incredible value. I have 2 mares in foal to Halo's Image right now, and am looking at what to do next year.

Maimonides, as was mentioned above is interesting, but I just don't know. There have been so many really well bred stallions who are either unraced or who flashed a little talent, that just havent panned out. He's a bit of a mess, too, leg wise. I think I may wait and see; the way Vinery goes with stallions, Id be afraid to breed to him and him end up in Turkey before my foal even hits the ground. In these trying times, Im not sure I want my mares used on unproven, unless they have talent, pedigree, and conformation. Then I MAY take a shot, if cheap enough.

Has anyone seen any Teufelsberg foals?

It's really hard to ignore the incentives Stonewall is offering Florida breeders, especially the complimentary Kentucky seasons if you qualify thru their Florida program.

I'm going to take a hard look at their roster but I do love Marquetry.

I DO love Marquetry.

But like Fireslam, I'm interested in whether anyone has seen any Teufelsburg offspring . .

Sweetsouthernsaint's son, Soy Conquistador, enjoyed similar success in Puerto Rico to those horses noted above by Jorge, including a win in Clásico Internacional del Caribe. He was also named Puerto Rican 3 year colt champion and the next year Puerto Rican Older Horse Champion.
