Top young stallion Dixie Union was euthanized yesterday due to neurological problems. A huge shame for Lane's End and for breeders to lose him at only 13. :(

I liked him quite a bit too. The offspring I saw of his all had a quality look about them. Does Dixieland Band have any other heir apparents to his branch of Northern Dancer? I think Bowman's Band is gone too.

Dixieland Band's best-advertised remaining sons are Hook and Ladder (in NY) and Southern Success (PA). There are around 2 dozen Dixieland Band sons advertised in major publications.

Hook and Ladder has more crops & is out of a Cox's Ridge mare. Southern Success is actually bred a little closer to Dixie Union, since they both are by Dixieland Band and out of a mare whose sire is by Seattle Slew (Dixie Union was out of a Capote mare; Southern Success was out of an A P Indy mare.)

Southern Success was a 2 y.o. stakes-winner & then got injured - I looked at him right after he retired & physically, he is very nice, and it did seem the type of injury that could probably be chalked up to bad racing luck, as in, there was no obvious conformational flaw.

But he retired to Pennsylvania and had to compete for regional mares with every other freshman sire in an extraordinarily bad economy . . . so the deck is pretty much stacked against him carrying the Dixieland Band banner to another generation. He might have a foal or two at the Fasig Tipton sale at Timonium this fall, if anyone wants to see what he produces.
