FYI: Sea-Bird's Dam

Postby Patuxet » Mon Feb 07, 2011 8:55 am

On another forum the question was raised as to why, after only three foals, Sicalade, the dam of the great Sea-Bird, was slaughtered.

The ever knowledgeable Tony Morris responded: "Sicalade had a very difficult foaling third time around, and it was thought that she would never carry another foal, so she went to the butcher."
"He is pure air and fire and the dull elements of earth and water never appear in him; he is indeed a horse ..." Wm. Shakespeare - Henry V

Ullrich's Peerage has this:

"The outstanding racehorse, Sea Bird, was the first and only foal of his dam. Within 18 months of his birth, so little was thought of him, that his dam, Sicalade, was sold to a butcher at St Anderlys, for, I believe, 100 francs, and she wound-up on the table...."
