With the Bernadini's and others who retired after running with Barbaro and their progeny on the Derby trail, does anyone else ever think what if hadn't of died?

I do . . .but I don't think he would have been a top sire. If his dam's other runners had done nearly as well, maybe. But it doesn't seem to be one of those fabulous families.

Dub, I was wondering that myself a while ago...

Sadly we will never know, but I truly believe he was the closest we had to being a Triple Crown winner.

Barbaro was a great horse, and the horses that were running against him were nothing to sneeze at (Bernardini) and Barbaro would have left Bernie in the dust.

What a shame that happened to him.

I beg to differ on this one.
However, I do agree that we lost a great horse and possibly a great 3yo rivalry for the ages.
Sigh. He almost made it.

Maybe Nicanor is carrying BARBARO's lost atheticism? Maybe not? I bet he eventually stands at stud. La Ville Rouge has two other full brothers on the ground. What about them?

I'm a firm believer in "mare power." Somethingroyal only had one real failure. The filly named "The Bride." Let's cross our fingers for La Ville Rouge.

I think he would have done well as a sire. Race record, speed, balanced conformation. The thread prompted me to rewatch some of his races. Great stride and plenty of stamina around 2 turns.

OK, Bernardini would maybe have come in 2nd to Barbaro

Well, for sure in the Derby(if Berni was in that one, hypothetically). Nobody was beating Barbaro on that day.
I think Berni could have beaten him on occasion and vice versa, hence my opinion on losing a possible great 3yo rivalry. I think many Barbaro fans just can't see or won't see how good Bernardini was. That crop was much stronger than many think...Well, at least those two were. lol.

You know, I forgot why Bernie was retired so soon...was he injured? I can't remember.

Did he go on to run as a 4 year old?

Gosh, I'm getting old, can't remember a darned thing.

Thanks! :)

Bernardini, as far as I know, was retired SOUND. I was so mad too. He was a top Class 3yo and could have been a monster at 4. Just like his sire. Both retired too soon for no reason other than greed. I hate it when sound top 3yo males are retired. There is no reason. I don't hold that against the horse. Just their connections.

I will get slammed for this but I always thought he (dini) was a tad bit overrated. He was talented no doubt but he got his rep by destroying cream puffs.

ha ha ha LOL LOL LOL BDW, sometimes you make me laugh so much my side hurts! cream puffs! hehehehe

Yea, he could have stayed running into the 4 year old season, I would think that would make the stallion even more valuable and the public gets to see what they are getting instead of perhaps a few lucky races..

I actually like seeing the older horses run better than the 3 year olds NOW. Before when I was younger I just knew the Derby was coming up and did not give much thought to anything else. But the horses that perhaps were not that great at 3 are coming into their own when they get older and you really get some great races.

I gotta go to the JC website now and see if there is a horse namd Cream Puff!!! LOL LOL

No slamming. lol. But DESTROYED is the key word here. He did run a very good race in the BC Classic and beat the best quality field of the year minus one. He should have run as a 4yo. It is a shame that he didn't.

Bernardini would have won the Preakness regardless of what happend to Barbaro.

But to answer the question posted at the top of the thread...what the hell does Barbaro running in the same race have to do with how other horses of his crop are doing at stud? He was by Dynaformer, so he would probably not have had much of an impact, maybe had a stakes winner or 2 so far and be kept in KY because of that and the massive support he got. How the horses of his crop performed at stud has no co-relation with how he would have performed at stud. If that was the case I will run a filly against an Oaks winner and then hope she pumps out great foals...because hey she ran against and in the same crop as an Oaks winner, thanks for one of the dumbest questions ever Dublino.

you know every few years this seems to happen. it's like, horse racing, just decides to crown a particular horse as the chosen one.

As stated, he beat no one, had he run in cali lava man would have cleaned his clock. he wasn't particularly fast, he didn't put up particularly astonishing numbers, he didn't do it particularly visually impressively either. He was a very talented horse, but no more or less talented than other top 3 year olds. put him in the 07 crop and he is an side note. and I think this is why he was retired early. he wanted no part of that 07 crop in the handicap division.

but those looks and the talent and the pedigree, it's like it "sold".
