Lovely natured stallion, left it. Did not have the Grey Sovereign nature.
Good race horse. What his pedigree was looking for, sorta had died out in NZ. Probably would have in the UK. Some of NZ TB mare's are being used for breeding sport horse. Most of his black type horses where fillies.

Hallo,
when I read the name Phaetonia in the damline of abovementioned sire, I immediately remember edAggressor. He is the damsire of the top German race horse and stallion Acatenango (by Surumu). Another interesting feature in Phaetusa is she the carried the wellknown Nearco/Hyperion nick.

Btw, it's the same damline of Reference Point (by Mill Reef). Sadly he died only 7 years old.

Best regards, Bettina

Great to see that he is being a chance over there. He was definitely one of my favourites when racing.

As Kiwi said there was not a lot in interest in him over here after his first few seasons at stud.

He was certainly a tough race horse especially during his three year old campaign. Started 13 times between October and May for seven wins including the prestigious BMW 2400m WFA. He then travelled back to Western Australia and won the G1 WA Derby three weeks later.

He raced well in Melbourne as an early four year old but never did win another major.

His sire, CHERAW, started his stud career at El Rancho Murrieta in California, having been raced by Charlie Whittingham for several years in the U.S. I almost bought a share in him, being a great fan of the Grey Sovereign line, but when I inspected him, found that he had inherited the nasty temperament usually associated with this line. That was enough to turn me off him. Apparently the syndication effort didn't materialize, as he was exported to Australia shortly thereafter. Several years later another Grey Sovereign line horse, ADRAAN, stopped over for a few races in the states. He showed much greater early speed and class than Cheraw and would have made an indellible impression on California breeding had he stayed. Once again, the sharp Aussies picked him up and before his premature death there, did prove to be an excellent stallion.

Heroicity's wins in Western Australia caught my eye and I always hoped he would prove worthy of the sire line. Now it seems he's in the U.S., proving again how small the horse world has become.

Other factors jibing, Heroicity could be very good for mares with Olden Times, Ahonoora, and Ahonoora's son Indian Ridge.

Olden Times should really like the combo of War Relic inbreeding in the sire and Caracalla (by Tourbillon, the whom Olden Time's dam is inbred very closely) inbreeding in the sire.

Ahonoora likes War Relic for reasons related to that stallion's inbreeding to Rock Sand and his best son (Indian Ridge) has none other than Grey Sovereign as 3rd damsire. Also of course, the Caracalla inbreeding in the dam of Heroicity ties into Ahonoora's Djebel male line as both Caracalla and Djebel were outstanding running sons of the great French stallion Tourbillon.

Well worth noting that Indian Ridge and Wolver Hollow have combined close up in winner Compton Place, a winner of the highly prestigious July Cup (GI).

Also, a quick check of the PQ shows only 2 examples of crossing Ahonoora and Heroicity's sire Cheraw (probably a few are outside the database though given that Ahonoora stood down there for about four or five years if a recall correctly) and one (Azabu Park) is GI Placed SW in South Africa.

Not bad at all...

Cheraw did OK in Western Australia given the quality of broodmare sent to him.

He sired three WA Derby winners during his ten years at stud plus around 13 other black type winners. One of these winners, Belele, stood at stud over there for ten years up to 1999 and did not disgrace himself considering the broodmares.

Usually the Grey Sovereign lines likes the #1 of Black Jester & relations.
Heroicity two SW fillies carried Laughter (Signal Light) 3/4 sister to Black Jester. About the only time it worked in New Zealand.

In Excess

When you consider the pedigrees of the likes of Adraan, Cheraw etc and look at the pedigrees of successful Australian based sires Rory's Jester, Canny Lad, Kenmare, etc, it makes me think if a horse like In Excess wouldn't have done a job in Australia.
