Pedigree Query

As Declan's Moon pulled away for and easy victory in the Santa Catalina Stakes, I was observing him coming back to the winners circle.

I am going to nick name Declans Moon the lizard, as his body is long cast and his neck and legs follow suit.

Congrats to Ron Ellis and Leo DM groom, as the big races for DM are coming fast. Good Luck in the Santa Anita Derby, to the lizard from all your fans.

He really has beautiful action, doesn't he? Although I never saw Swaps race, what I have seen of him on film makes me think about Declan's Moon--long, seemingly effortless strides, kicking into gear when asked, winning with ears pricked.

I'm glad for the Siegels, they've put a lot of money in the business and it appears they now have a bona fide Triple Crown horse. DC is inbred 3 x 4 Mr. Prospector. but with A.P. Indy on the top, he shouldn't be bothered by the extra distance.

BTW, his second and third dams are Cal bred mares, who sold for very little at auction in the 70's and 80's. The fourth dam is the good English mare SUNSPECK, so DC's pedigree is a good example of a fine family lying dormant for two generations before returning to life.

Declan's Moon appears to be a very special race horse.

Around the eighth pole he seemed to put it in another gear and easily pass then draw away from Spanish Chestnut and Going Wild...and still have plenty left in-the-tank as he cruised under the wire.

It looked almost effortless...he is VERY special.

Interesting story on how Ron Ellis got the horse. As you know, Ellis trains for B. Wayne Huighes, formerly the primary owner of Malibu Moon. Josh Pons (stood MM in Maryland) called Ellis and told him he had to see a MM yearling colt in Md. Ellis flies in, inspects the colt and passes on him (private deal). The colt goes to the Timonium where the Siegels buy him and give him to ....Ron Ellis!

Ron has done a masterful training job with this horse and he certainly stands out among the Derby contenders!
