Thoughts on Offlee Wild

Wondering what everyones thoughts are on Offlee Wild. He recently came to Pennsylvania. Most of the time when a stallion comes here it is because they are on the downslide. (there are exceptions). I know that George Shaw ( the Matchmaker) had him high on his GRASP score for what that it worth. Does anyone have any insight into this stallion?

Good start, and extremely popular last year at the price, but looking more like a Chapel Royal at this stage.

Total progeny earnings as of this writing of $1.7 million ... you could do much better even in the Pennsylvania market ... his AEI was 1.70 a few months back but has now dropped to 1.58. Was the beneficiary of one big horse (She Be Wild). If you notice, She Be Wild has earned $1.3 million, then there is a big drop-off to his next-highest earner, Heavenville ($285,000).

Thanks for the response, that was why I was asking the question. He has one big runner and then a big drop. I was hoping someone with inside knowledge might be able to shed some light on why he left KY.

These are exciting times for Darley Stables, Offlee Wild and Pin Oak Lane Farm. The move to Pennsylvania is a clever one which will bring Darley's prescense to the region, via Offlee Wild standing at Pin Oak Lane- it is a win win situation for all involved. Not all good things happen just in Kentucky!

He covered 43 mares this year in Kentucky, last year he had 146 mares with 83 live foal reports. He brings nothing to Pennsylvania and might be a good thing for some, however, I think he is a long shot to succeed in any market, much less Pennsylvania.

For many of us, it is better to be a big fish in a small pond-Offlee Wild is no different. With a plethora of stallions to choose from, the Kentucky market is not necessarily the best place for a superstar like Offlee Wild to stand. Granted, Offlee Wild is not the Justin Bieber of the breeding world. Offlee Wild is more like George Clooney-made to last.

Do you have a connection to Offlee Wild? The reason I ask is that I saw only have two posts under your profile and they were both for him. So my curiosity kicked in. Have you bread to him? I do appreciate your comments.

No relation, but I have been following his movement since 2005. I am a loyal fan of a handful of horses that captured my attention long ago. I like to keep abreast of the horses I am passionate about even after they come off the track. Some might call me a horse groupie! lol

Btw, though I am a loyal fan of a few horses including Offlee Wild, I am much more than that and therefore don't want to paint myself as one ignorant of the facts in relation to the comments on this forum. I have immersed myself in the horse world, including breeding, as a hobby. Yet my knowledge is on par with a professional in the industry. Though others may look to numbers when selecting a stallion, like everything in life, success is never as simple as black and white.

Mermaid, it's great that you are a fan, but these days breeders need to carefully decide which stallions offer the best bang for their buck, since it is very expensive to breed, foal and raise a young horse.

I bred to him and have a fair grasp of his story. He was supported his first year by some so so mares mostly from one owner. His next year he didnt get much backing. He hit on She Be Wild and some other nice two year olds on the first crop and got some decent backing that breeding season.

Economic Disaster, the lack of talent from second crop (which was expected from his book), and Darley refusing to budge on stud fee (know this comment will draw response but trust me I shopped mares at all farms and got deals 9 out of 10 darley was the one that didnt). Not to mention from the jump the kentucky elite snubbed their noses at his lines so his first trip up meant he was put on the black list.

The foals the one season he got booked well will hit track in 2013 and I suspect he will get 1 to 2 big 2yo's. I think it wouldbe a smart bet to get him for 4k or less with this angle in mind. From what ive seen from his small crops he can get some fast 2yo's that seem to fade by 3yo. Also if you study the pedigrees of his best get there is some strong nicking patterns developing. Off top of head matching with Petionville, seekingthegold, inreality. He also has connection to US Ranger who got off to hot start at auction. All in all for 4k I dont think you will find a better deal in PA and would book sooner then later.

I can't imagine anyone, much less "the Kentucky elite" snubbing the family of Golden Trail. Successful sire Dynaformer is closely related to Offlee Wild, as is potential sire U.S. Ranger.
