Does anyone have an opinion about Matty G? (other then he isn't much to look at) Anynody have any foals by him? What type of mare would cross well?

Since we are at Darby Dan...any opinions on HAP?

IMO, Matty G looks to have decent conformation - just has a plain head. I really like his runner, My Cousin Matt, and Mayakovsky is a gorgeous horse. He looks like he's throwing some nice, solid runners. Probably not the most commercial sire around, but should be good for racing prospects.

The Stallion Register photo is a bad photo, but there is no denying his plain head. Considering where this horse started his success is amazing. His stats are impressive (4% Graded stakes winners from foals) and his first group of Kentucky foals (better mares) are two year olds of this year.

I have a filly by Matty G that I will be selling in September that is developing into a very nice individual - thankfully without Daddy's head!

Forgot to mention that he has had great success with Mr. P line mares, not that that would be a surprise for any Slew line stallion (linebreeding to Myrtlewood).

Hap is a smallish refined grass horse that will probably be a good breed-to-race stud. Sons of Theatrical won't be commercial unless they prove themselves.

I liked Matty G well enought to breed to him last year. His stats are impressive considering his past opportunities. Now that he is in KY and getting more mares, he just might really take off.

His dam, STAR GEM, was without a doubt the best mudlark I have ever seen. Over 20 years ago she won races in the mud by up to 27 lengths, as I recall, rising from $6,250 claimers on dry land, to competing in Graded stakes competition in the mud. Every summer her form would nosedive, but as soon as the first rains hit, she became a new horse again.

Her best son, STAR OF COZZENE, was a terrific turf horse by Cozzene, and like his mother, greatly improved as the course became boggier. He won a number of graded stakes on a soft turf course. I would have to think that Matty G. would be a good wet track sire, too, especially in light of the Seattle Slew top side.
