Orb retired, $25,000 fee

Not shocked. Disappointed to see him retire. I think the 7 week TC took its toll on him.

Thoughts on the price? I think it is fair.

For $25,000 you can also go to Midnight Lute, City Zip, Curlin, English Channel, Sky Mesa, Tale of the Cat.

All other Malibu Moon sons are under $10,000. Other first year Malibu Moon's for 2014: Prospective in FL set at $5,000. Freedom Child in MD set at $3,500. Heat Shimmer in IN set at $2,500.

I think he peaked early, plus if you look at the race charts of his string of wins (MSW, ALW, AOC, Gr2, Gr1, Gr1)....the horses that he faced in those wins never showed up for the better races in the summer and fall. He didn't meet the best, most consistent 3yo runners until the Derby, where he moved way, way up on a sloppy track (consistent with his breeding). Oxbow, Will Take Charge, and Palace Malice all showed up, all kept going, and all improved over the season. They all moved up whereas arguably Orb did not.

He'll get a lot of attention at $25,000.

Of the two new horses at Claiborne, I think Data Link at $7500 is the better deal of the two, especially for a Gone West-line mare.
