has Birdonthewire had much success as a Sire or a Broodmare sire? i know he was for sale couple of years ago for i think 20k? one of my mares first and only TB foal was by him and she was a winner of 2. just curious this filly might go up for sale so im just checking.
There will be discouraging times. But a life without horses;
Now that's discouraging.

He had a good 2004, ranking 27th on the Ca. BH Sires list, with 1.2 million in earnings. He had 29 winners from 64 starters. The prior year he bred 23 mares in KY (only 7 live foals - 30%) and 28 mares last year in Ca. He stood his first season in Ca. for 3K and for whatever reason his fee was raised to 5K just as he seemed to be making progress.

I like the fact he's from the H2R line and is an outcross for many of the Ca. mares. He has lifetime 64% starters from foals, 67% winners from starters (excellent) and 15% wins from starts (very good). 6% stakes winners from starters and 15% stakes horses from starters (very good). Upside down on the AEI 1.24 vs 1.63, but that's par for 2/3rds of stallions. Solid earnings per start of 3K.

Overall I like the horse for California, and would breed to him, but not for no 5k (no way). I would want to investigate how may live foals he gets from the 2004 breeding season. At 17H he may be a difficult match, but I have not seen the horse in person. He stands a Maders Thoroughbreds in the Central Valley.

Sorry, I didn't answer the broodmare part, but I couldn't find any info. on that aspect. I would think he will do fine as a broodmare sire. I would be more concerned with the mares bottom line, for success.

I have a 1998 mare by Birdonthewire, one of his few stakes winners. I think she got a lot of her tenacity from her female line, since all her near ancestors were tough horses, top and bottom. Now her dam is proving to be a good stakes producer, with two stakes winners and one stakes placed(now 3yo) out of four runners, five foals of racing age. My mare is reportedly 16.1hh, and was versatile on all tracks and surfaces. Unfortunately not very many of his horses have been all that great.

My "This is For Gran" mare is by Birdonawire and I love the mare!
She is 4 this year and probably 16.1hh+ and I figure she should go close to 17hh when she is done growing

She didnt do much as a race horse but is a really athletic and nice mare to ride and will be bred to Guaranteed Gold and shipped to her new home in Europe once she is confirmed in foal
