Giacomo in his Second Career

Postby StrawberryFelidos » Sat May 07, 2005 9:19 pm

One little gray colt just punched his ticket to studdum today.
Since he won the Derby, what kind of fee do you think Giacomo could command at stud? I don't see a lot of "familiar/common" names in his pedigree at all (no Mr. P, Northern Dancer, etc) and I know that Holy Bull doesn't command a big fee. Plus, Giacomo hasn't won a lot else up to this point. BUT he did win the Derby- and I'm thinking that pretty much seals a deal.
If he never won another race in his life (a la Monarchos) what kind of fee might he get and how fast do you think a stallion farm would want to grab him?

Not much and not very.

A Derby win does not a stud make, especially when he comes from such a quiet line with little to no commercial value.

Holy Bull isn't much of a sire, isn't commanding much of a fee and there's little demand for a son of his at stud.

Personally I reckon Darley will buy him (they have a thing for sons of their studs standing alongside  ) & tops $30k even if he wins another Gr1. For me he just doesn't have the consistency (Holy Bull) to be a good sire of sires year in year out like some, and a couple big horses gets you noticed but by no way wholly in the 'big time'... as a side note I do see Macho Uno filling up- no change to fee - and Holy Bull going to somewhere around the $20-30k mark.

Hopefully, he will race thru 5, and we can worry about the stud fee then. I think Macho Uno's success or lack there of will influence Giacomo's demand.

Come on you guys....let history repeat itself...I think Taylor Made should run right out and buy Holy Bull...offer them a ridiculous amount of money and then claim he just wasn't bred to the right mares!!! Then 4 years from now we can all breed to him cheaper!!!We've all seen the ads...he has done it before...he can do it again!!! laugh! laugh!!!

Ahhhh, a Derby winner without high stud value- can it be true? :D
Dare I even dream of another Derby winner coming back as a four-year-old?
Somehow it sounds too good to be true. I don't think it can last.
But just invision it:
Funny Cide vs. Giacomo. Maybe not the greatest match-up in history, but historical nonethtless. Puzzle out who would win that one!
I once dreamed of Smarty Jones vs. Funny Cide, but this would do.
