Does anyone love this horse? Think he is gorgeous? Or have you bred to him?

Liberty: I liked him too. I'm somewhat dismayed that he was put to stud considering his record. Owned by Bob and Beverly Lewis, I thought that they stretched his talents running him in the KD. I remember at the time thinking he was out of his league. As you might expect, I'm high on SHAM, but I haven't a clue what to expect from Scrimshaw's offspring. Hopefully being in Kentucky, the quality of his mares will be high and that will help him. Gulch is definitely a perveyor of quality, but it'll be a least four or five years before any clues about Scrimshaw will be available. Like you I'll be watching with keen interest. Out of curiosity what broodmare sire's will best suit Scrimshaw? Best wishes - Shammy

I saw Scrimshaw this week when I visited Millennium Farms. I was pleasantly surprised and the manager said he was fully-booked. My scribble notes say "big hip, nice all over".

If you breed to Scrimshaw it should be based on his performance at 2 (undefeated in 2 starts with some fast times), not his mixed performances going longer at 3.

He may have been a sprinter asked to go longer and had enough guts/class to stay around in the Preakness or else he wasn't that much of a racehorse after his precocious speed.

As usual, Pete is right on target with some thoughtful information. Any distance of ground races for Scrimshaw should be thrown out. He was definitely misplaced in the KD. I don't know whether you agree are not, Pete, but I don't see many top quality mares going to him with likes of ElUSIVE QUALITY, et al, standing in KY. Thanks Pete.

Hi Sham,

The mare base in KY is so deep that most stallions who have something to offer get some mares of quality.

The larger the farm, the greater the likelyhood that the farm will be able to support their stallion themselves.

In the case of an Adena Springs, the stallions are often nearly booked to their own mares and they bump their own mares when a paying customer comes along.

Millennium isn't so small, and they have a number of their own mares that they've bred to their stallions in the past. I think you'll find that Scrimshaw will get some good mares from them and perhaps outside as well. Elusive Quality is in a far different price category and The Cliff's Edge (also by Gulch) is out at $20K, so if you like Scrimshaw on looks and 2yo performance, he makes sense.

I know I could look this up, but what is Scrimshaw stud fee? Just lazy. What lines have the best opportunity to cross or line-up with him? I'm a big fan of SHAM, but I think his record is sketchy as a sire and broodmare sire. Best wishes, Shammy

His stud fee is $6,500 this year. He sold as a yearling for $125,000 and as a 2yo for $550,000. All his raced sibs are talented as well, with earnings over $100K and two other stakes horses, all from different sires.

Gulch did well with most mare lines, but wasn't tried much with Raise a Native. His progeny have mostly been on dirt, from 6-10f distances. His best results were with Northern Dancer sons' daughters. As a broodmare sire, Sham has done well with most stallions, but especially good with Northern Dancers and above average with Mr. Prospector sons.

I really didn't see any obvious negative crosses, as many obscure and varied families are represented from these sires as well--Hail to Reason, Bold Ruler, Ribot, In Reality.

I would like to see crosses on Endeavour, such as with mares descended from Fall Aspen, Prove It, and Pretense and Porterhouse. These would include daughters of Timber Country, Meadowlake and sons, Deputed Testamony, Horse Chestnut, Mazel Trick.

Henthorn: Thanks for your information. Apparently an Icecapade line mare fits the bill w/Scrimshaw very well then?

I don't see why not. Nearctic and Native Dancer and almost anything else. He's a very well-balanced boy at 16.1hh, so should physically suit most any mare shape as well.

I love him, his breeder was one of our former owner's a few years back. What is sad is he lost the mare Rouge Girl. But he is handsome.
