Indian Charlie

Postby monicabee » Wed Jun 08, 2005 5:44 am

Joe mentioned in another threa that he likes this stallion. I have been keeping my eye on him because 1) his runners have done extremely well on the NY circuit at least, and 2) he is the sire of one of the handsomest NY breds at the FT Saratoga sale last year. I coveted that horse and I am waiting for him to emerge on the scene to see if he was a good pick. BTW, I just looked up this colt, named Indian Hawke, in the database, and it looks like someone else liked him too as they added a picture from the sale - go check him out.

Anybody have any thoughts about Indian Charlie as a value sire at $15K?

His foals aren't selling very commercially, and he isn't getting the BIG horse. But he has been one of the most consistent producers of good runners of $100K earnings and up. Apparently his outcrossed pedigree suits all sorts of mares in order for him to be that consistent. I would seriously consider breeding him for a breed-to-race stud at $15K, particularly if you have good breeders awards in your state, and good purses.

I would agree with Henthorn, but also add one thing: his runners are extremely fragile, just like the In Excess'; he is a great value if you have an very durable mare who has a history of throwing sound foals.

We bred a daughter of Relaunch to him this year... only because she has a long history of throwing sound individuals.

I was going to ask about that. Is he just fragile, or does he have the typical In Excess taking front end crookedness to a whole new level?

Kimberly,

I have some photos of his front end if you're interested... just forward your email address.

Personally, I think it's a bit of both... fragile and moderately crooked.

Crooked and fragile... that's a bit of a downer. I'll file that info for the future and still hope for the best for Indian Hawke - he looked straight to me, though the walking ring is not the best place to judge.

When I visited Airdrie recently, I saw Indian Charlie, among others. My notes say he is a big horse, big-boned, and clumsy due to nerve damage from being a wobbler due to neck problems. He has had surgery for stabilizing his neck to stop the damage. I really didn't observe his legs as well due to his clumsiness.
