Lyphard - who died earlier this week at 36, the oldest thoroughbred alive - was a durable and successful racehorse, went on to prove an amazingly successful stallion: 115 SW from 843 foals per this morning's paper and a sire of sires as well as a broodmare sire.
Why in all the pedigree discussions on this Board have there been no mentions of inbreeding to Lyphard ever brought up? I did a search and came up with none...what gives???
Lyphard - why so little discussion of him by pedigree fans?
Moderators: Roguelet, WaveMaster, madelyn
Actually madelyn - there have been discussions of Lyphard -
I didn't find any re: Danzig but did find mentions of Lyphard nicking well with respect to sirelines/dams carrying: Crimson Saint, Nijinsky.
Also with respect to Kissing Kris liking a bit of Lyphard and
A discussion of the S. African son of Lyphard Elliodar as a stallion and
As a source of Court Martial for matings to Legal Jousting.....I must have run my search with respect to just one of the forums and not the Board in general....<sigh>
Anyway -in honor of this long lived and truly great stallion I was going to compile all the posts on this site that made mention of using him in modern matings into one posting...but half way thru the computer blinked and now that's gone....maybe I can get it done tomorrow.
RIP Lyphard

Agreed Sysonby - it is remarkable that Gainesway have done so well in maintaining these retirees but also remarkable that they have made the committment to reward them/respect them once their 'usefulness' - in a commercial sense - is gone. They have set the standard for the sport in this respect as well as in being a world class stud farm for so long.
hi guys
I always viewed Lyphard as very special. He was a generous horse...and a wonderful sire...and many of his daughters were beautiful and lovely...and quality producers.
He often marked his get with a white patch on/under the lower lip...and white facial markings. Many of his sons and daughters were bay with black points (including mane and tail) and one or more white ankles and/or pasterns. Those markings along with good bone and a robust body were often standard equipment...as was a lovely...soft eye.
What a quality thoroughbred...'liitle' Lyphard (written endearingly)...he'll be missed.
Respectfully

I was at Gainesway looking at stallions last fall and saw, among others, Cozzene (age 25) and Mt. Livermore (24). Both stallions were still actively breeding and both looked great--better than some much younger stallions I'd seen at other farms. I, too, think it's wonderful the way they manage their horses.

For those interested in his son Elliodor:

Elliodor sired about than 99 stakes horses before his death. Most of them were fillies, but he had his fair share of colt and gelding big horses. He is the sire of 1883 SAf Horse of the Year Model Man. Elliodor is also a HIGHLY sought-after broodmare sire in South Africa.

Jellac,
I have a very nice 2yo colt that is tail male to Lyphard. I am very, very happy with him and he is extremely athletic.
The family seems to be late bloomers, so I have just now (last week) sent him to the trainer. He has been "eyeing" him at our farm for about 6 months, and now we will start to see what he has.
His name is Dance Across Texas, and he should be starting sometime late this year down at Sam Houston.
I will keep you posted.
