Toccet - Conformation/Stud potential?

Postby Heidilady » Thu Jul 14, 2005 1:34 am

Hey I just wanted some people better equipped than I to judge Toccet's conformation for me and wax genealogical on his potential as a sire. I assumed a thread might've been out on this already but I couldn't find one. I guess I never gave up hope that he'd come around with proper handling and since that clearly never happened I'd love to see him succeed as a stallion.

Here's his stallion register page. He's just gotten through with his first breeding season.

Toccet is a beautiful animal, was a top two year old and posesses outstanding genetics. He has as good a chance making it as any of the stallions with no babies on the ground. At $15000 live foal he might be a bargain if you like to gamble.

He definitely has a sprinter build with the short back, short croup, short cannons (although I'd like to see more bone below the knee.) His neck and head aren't very attractive, but overall he's ok. He is just a tad over at the knee, but better than most stallions out there.

Oh good, I'm not the only one who thought "over at the knee." I'm also not too terribly fond of the humpy-looking withers, although that is more of a cosmetic than a conformation flaw.

I would be quite cautious about soundness with Toccet. Awesome Again will get a big runner, but so far his three biggest runners have had some sort of foot issue. Ghostzapper was held together by sticky tape his whole career. Wilko had bone chips and a quarter crack. Toccet's ankles changed greatly between his 2yo and 3yo seasons. Mares with tons of bone and feet of steel should do okay with him.

Hi Heidilady,

I'll have to be in the less enthusiastic camp.

Toccet's pedigree is light to weak for a stallion in his price range. That's not usually as big a concern for me if the horse was a special runner but Toccet fell short of that in my estimation. He did defeat an inexperienced Empire Maker as well as Kafwain and During but mostly forgettable foes.

His race career was really only at 2. Everything after that was uninspiring. I'm aware of his 'remodelling' problem, and I'd be concerned about that as well. I've not seen him in person but from the Stallion Register photo he may be over at the knee (as noted), a bit long in the back, steeped shouldered and high in his rear pasterns.

Castleton-Lyons is clearly leveraging Ghostzapper and Awesome Again by pricing him so aggressively. Certainly this past beeding season, Saarland, amongst others, was a more compelling choice. We'll get an idea ofhis commercial appeal this November when his first mares in foals sell.

Regards,

Pete
