Does anyone have any opinions on this horse? We've been offered a good deal to him for our mare Cryin'n the Chapel. Hadn't even considered him as thought he was out of our price range.

The above web page has video clips of a chestnut colt foal by Captain Rio. The dam is 7 times winner Lace Flower.

His first crop sold really well this year in the UK Sales. General opinion was that they were athletic and of easy temperment. I had a late colt foal ( April 29th) by him out of my mare Bonny Ruan who was on the small side ( typical first foal) but was well put together and very very easy to condition and handle. He sold as a foal for 4x his stud fee which wasn't so bad

Most of the Captain Rio's were small even out of mares that had previous foals. They were all very good lookers and quite correct. I am a little leary of Joe's stallions after the first year though, ie City On A Hill who is gone and Iron Mask who's foals were also small, did extremely well as foals and went very cold second year with foals. Being by the hot Pivotal is always a good thing and hopefully this will help his shelf life. If you are breeding commercially I would go for his new stallion Arkan (sp). They will sell well as foals, if you are breeding to race you should do fine with Captain Rio.

We are in NZ so didn't have the choice of the other stallion. Our mare is now safely in foal to Captain Rio and we await the outcome in October.

Here's the mare approx 10 wks in foal
