Pedigree Query

Walmac just released another with Scatmandu heading to New Mexico. Wafare has said they will move all of their stallions with the exception of Richter Scale (still wondering why he gets to stay) and High Yield has been purchased by Argentinian interests. High Yield will stand in the U.S. but where hasn't been announced.

Looks like they're cleaning house so that they can buy a bunch of new, popular freshmans (who, in all likelihood, will be cleared just like their ex-stablemates a few years down the road)

No joke, but I doubt there were a lot of folks beating down their door for poor little Scatmandu! I know that Walmac was intending to bring in some new blood for next year, but their aren't a whole lot of free agents out there to be had. Of course, following the Breeders Cup there will be the usual retirements. Perhaps, they're looking at picking something up then.

Actually, Scatmandu yearlings sold quite well at the Keenland marathon sale. HIs departure may give a boost to those which are already on the ground or forthcoming next year. You just never know. I see that offspring by Exploit [no longer in the US] have brought some good prices at the sale. The trouble with Storm Cat is that he now has too many sons standing at stud.

Poor little Scatmandu just had a colt named Tiger Heart come in second by a nose at Belmont today: 6th race, Vosburgh S. (Grade 1), raising the colt's reclord by $100K to

Not too shabby, I would say. Of course, I don't know how much he was sold for originally to figure out how much he has actually earned for his connections.

He's got 2 stakes performers and one minor stakes winner from 125 foals of racing age. He has average earnings per starter of $19,000 and his sales median for this year was $4100. Not to mention his 2yo in training average went from $80,000 last year to $15,000 this year. He's ranked 37 in a very soft group of third crop sires. Call me crazy, but I'm gonna say Walmac gonna come out smelling like a rose on this one. Favorite Trick still gets some big sales prices, but you don't see folks clamoring for him to come back to KY. Sactmandu is a lovely bred horse, but he hasn't lived up to his pedigree in the breeding shed.

Scatmandu's real problem was 44% live foals from mares covered last year. When you only cover 40 some mares with 19 live foals then momma has to look elsewhere for a donor. Owners could not afford those odds here in KY with all the competition for mares. Hopefully the fresh air and sunshine will help his sperm count. Unless those numbers change, no one can afford to breed to him at any price.

I didn't know that about Scatmandu, and yes, I can see where that is a big handicap for the stallion.
There are a good many others with fertility problems, in particular when their book gets up in numbers. Breeding to a Freshman stallion has its risks as well in that regard as well as breeding to aging stallions, so as a mare owner, I have to do my homework.

Looks like good old Storm Cat is still going strong, lol.
