Song of the Sword, Lord ofthe Thunder to Fox Tale in Pennsylvania
Song of the Sword, a multiple graded stakes-placed son of Unbridled's Song, and Lord ofthe Thunder, a stakes-winning son of Saint Ballado, will stand the 2006 breeding season at Fox Tale Stud (formerly Blue Moon Equestrian) in Coopersburg, PA. Both stallions are owned by Paraneck Stables, and are respectively the only black-type sons of Unbridled's Song and Saint Ballado standing in Pennsylvania.
Song of the Sword ran second in the 2004 Illinois Derby (g. II), third in the 2004 Lexington Stakes (g. II) and 2005 Stymie H, and eleventh in Smarty Jones' Kentucky Derby, during a career that included four wins and earnings of $269,555. During his career, Song of the Sword defeated such major graded winners as Castledale [IRE], Friends Lake, Pollard's Vision, Suave, Quintons Gold Rush, Skipaslew, Saratoga County, and Sinister G. He is out of the Crusader's Sword mare Appealing Ms. Sword, dam of additional 2005 stakes performer Mr. Sword, and grade II-placed winner Valerie's Dream. The introductory fee for Song of the Sword has been set at $3,500, with special consideration to resident Pennsylvania mares, black-type mares, six-figure earners, and mares with heavy black-type pedigrees.
Lord ofthe Thunder, a stakes winner of seven races and $329,531, meanwhile, moves to Fox Tale after standing his initial season last year at Metropolitan Stud in New York. Lord ofthe Thunder, who broke his maiden by 15 lengths as a 2-year-old going 6 furlongs at Aqueduct, also won NYRA's Kings Point Handicap and placed in two other stakes. He defeated such graded stakes winners as Classic Endeavor, Danthebluegrassman, New York Hero, and Gander during his career. Lord ofthe Thunder is out of the Deputy Minister mare Astarte, herself a half-sister to Canadian champion 2-year-old filly Honky Tonk Tune. His stud fee has been set at $2,500 live foal, with special consideration to resident Pennsylvania mares, black-type mares, six-figure earners, and mares with heavy black-type pedigrees.
Bringing Song of the Sword and Lord ofthe Thunder into the state marks Paraneck's first major foray into the Pennsylvania breeding industry. "With the introduction of slots in the state, and the expected surge in purses, now seemed like the perfect time to make a serious move in Pennsylvania," said Ernie Paragallo of Paraneck. "But I wanted to do it right: with stallions who have major black-type earnings, and pedigrees on par with horses entering stud anywhere in the world." Paragallo said he is offering incentives to the best mares in the state as a way of showing his long-term commitment to the PA program. "A lot of smaller Pennsylvania breeders can't afford to ship their mares to Kentucky or Florida, or pay massive six-figure stud fees," he explained. "Song of the Sword and Lord ofthe Thunder offer the chance to breed to young, commercially appealing stallions right in breeders' backyards."
At Fox Tale, which changed its name last month from Blue Moon Equestrian, the addition of the two new stallions follows last year's purchase of the graded-stakes placed Rubiyat, one of the state's leading sires by Average Earnings Index. "Looking at how sons of Unbridled's Song like Songandaprayer and Buddha have done at stud, both at the sales and on the track, Song of the Sword really can't miss," said Vince Tucciarone, owner of Fox Tale. "And the Saint Ballados are equally hot, with Yankee Victor, Straight Man, and Sweetsouthernsaint. We feel like this is a new era for our farm, and for the PA market in general."
