Stallion--Mining
Does anyone know WHERE in Japan Mining is located?

You may be asking, "Who cares?!? He's in Japan!"
My friend has a mare by Mining and I have her daughter. He is turning out to be a decent Broodmare sire.

I would like to see some pictures of him (other than what is on this database).

Mining
I believe he is dead.
The farm where I board my broodmares stands a stallion that is a son of Mining. His dam is a 1/2 sister to Wimbledon.

Mining for years was standing at East Stud, on the island of Hokkaido. If he's still alive I imagine he's still there. Not sure what photo is posted on PQ, but here's a link to one of him in Japan (still can't get the <IMG src=....... to work here...)

Hi Derring,
Mining was a very fast son of Mr. Prospector, winning 6 of his 7 starts including the Vosburgh H (G1). He had some success at stud but he lost commercial appeal partially based on the fact that many of his get were perceived to be weak kneed.
That said, his son Mr. Sinatra, ran 62 times, winning 5 graded stakes and over $700k. He was a mainstay during the winter meet at Aqueduct (and an excellent slop horse).
Much of the unsoundness that has been attributed to Mining is felt to have been caused by his close inbreeding to Raise A Native (2x4).
He hails from a strong female family, especially his 3rd dam, Lady Be Good (dam of DISCIPLINARIAN and 5 other black type runners). Possibly adding to Mining's unsoundness is his 2nd dam, Impish, who won her only start and his talented first dam, I Pass, who won 2 of only 3 starts. That's 2 generations of less than sound performers.
I won a small stakes with my mare, Tsakpina, whose 3rd dam is I Pass (dam of Mining) but decided that I wouldn't breed her because her first 4 dams had a total of 5 races (3 wins). In her pedigree, each generation had a single SW (as of 2001) and many unraced or very lightly raced foals. It's the same family as Mining and points to his distaff side as a potential source of his unsoundness.
I also owned a filly named Honorable Halo (Double Honor - Amy's Halo by Mining). She was very fast but had bad knees. We were able to get her to win 2 times at the end of her career only because Charlestown had worked on the track surface and races were shortened from 4.5f to 4f. She could go sub :34 for 3f but couldn't last 5f, (in a 5.5f race she led by 8 at the 1/8th pole and lost by 10).
As a broodmare sire, Mining's daughters foals average about 6 races a year - less than average (about 7). They tend to be a like Mining's own get, fast while they hold up - with expections like Mr. Sinatra.
While it's impossible to say whether Mining's daughters will have success with the same bloodlines that he did, it's clear from looking at the soundness issue that Northern Dancer blood, especially with Hyperion, Ribot and (some) Damascus have led to sounder horses. There has been success with Raise A Native lines but overall, as a group, they show to be unsound. I'd stay clear of Raise A Native (especially Mr. Prospector) if Mining is in the first 3 generations.
Good luck,
Pete

Wow, Pete. It's great to get this kind of information. .....And unfortunately, a lot of the puzzle pieces are coming together.
I had decided quite some time ago not to breed this mare to any stallion that had Raise A Native in the pedigree. I'm not negating that he was an influential sire, just that any future offspring had no need of more.

Hi Derring,
You're welcome of course and hope the info helps.
As breeders we sometimes have to make accomodations to the facts about qualities and liabilities in the blood of our horses. At least you know the problems with Mining and I wish you success.
Regards,
Pete
