thunder gulch

Hey everybody,

It looks like Thunder Gulch is on a roll. His excellent two-year-olds are coming from the mare crop he bred after Point Given was horse of the year in 2001. I'm forgetting the details of his stud career -- wasn't he shipped overseas before his first crops even raced or something? And then brought back after Spain, Tweedside, and Point Given hit big? Can someone inform me about this?

I think he stood in Japan for a season or two

Thunder Gulch was at Ashford Stud from 1996-'98.

He spent 1999 at East Stud and was promptly brought back to Ashford in 2000...

He's having a good year, but really not that much better than last year, and this is coming from a huge fan of him. Well maybe a bit better because he had Sense of Style for his earnings last year, but he was ranked in the top 10 for juvy sires last year too. Guess I'm just trying to not get too excited as he's been a pretty big disappointment after Point Given's crop. And Sense of Style and Reverberate were big flops in the big dances this year. I certainly hope he'll succeed, he needs a good colt to run the TC trail, but he's always done better with his fillies.

Don't forget he was shuttling down here from 1996 to 2002 and served 86, 93, 111, 127, 89, 155 :o and 106 mares respectively.

Surely that must have had some effect on the quality of his progeny. In fact, I think his first Australian crop were his best.

Now that he doesn't have to travel and perform like a machine may start to make a difference.
